Hello I am new to this list but after reading the "Archived " mailings for the past two years I think this is where I should be. My interest is in a MARY JACKSON. She claimed to be born in Kirkby Moorside around 1799. from the 1851 census she said 1803 but on all other census returns she had about 1799. Problem 1) the only births for mary jacksons I could find were for one born to a George and Mary Jackson 05 May 1796 and another to a Margaret Jackson 28 Feb 1796, no father given. (Not sure if she is one of these) We know she married James Gascoigne 26 Aug 1822 in Scrayingham. James was the son of Nicholas Gascoigne and Elizabeth Mason born June 10 1801 Problem 2) There was another marriage of a James Gascoigne and Mary Jackson at St. Olaves, York 09 July 1821. Both couples had a son George born 1 year apart. and they both lived in East Acklam and Leavening. (This Mary would appear to have been born in York) The LDS have them both mixed up. One George was born in York and christened in York 07 Aug 1822. The other was born in Leavening 17 Aug 1823. The latter being my family. between them they would appear to have had three wives. (Cann't be sure which was mine) The Mary and James Gascoigne had their first child Jane in Kirkbymoorside in 1822, no birth date given as this was from the 1861 census. After this date the couple moved around and had further children in Leavening, Scrayingham, Howsham and Sheepsridge, Huddersfield. James was a Wheelwright and Blacksmith. By the 1851 census Mary was a widow and living in East Acklam. Their youngest daughter, Ellen married my Great Grandfather, Akins Elliot in Acklam. Would love to know if anyone has found a Mary who might fit this picture. and who her parents were. I also have Milners mainly from Settrington, but they were never still either. Any help would be gratefully recieved Cynthia - Ontario Canada
Hi Cynthia, Welcome to the list. My husband has JACKSON connections in Kirkby Moorside so we have collected some data from the parish registers. There are four Mary/Maria JACKSON's christened there in the period 1795 to 1803: 5 May 1795 - Mary (born 25 April 1795) 1st child of George Jackson, innkeeper of Kirby Moorside. Mother- Mary, daughter of John Grundon. 28 February 1796 - Maria (born 25 February 1796) daughter of Margaret Jackson of Kirby Moorside. 2 July 1797 - Mary (born 2 June 1797) 1st child of William Jackson of FD (Farndale), son of William and Mary Jackson of FD(Farndale). Mother- Sally, daughter of John and Sarah Garret (or Garnet?) of FD(Farndale). 26 September 1798 - Mary (born 21 September 1798) 3rd child and 3rd daughter of Thomas Jackson of Kirby, son of William Jackson of Kirby and Eliz. Moon. Mother- Jane, daughter of Stephen and Jane Barker of Sinnington. Four options probably just confuses the issue even more for you but there are a lot of JACKSON's in Kirkby. However, looking at the IGI Batch Numbers for Kirkby Moorside christenings and putting in the name GASCOIGNE, pulls out the following- 2 September 1821 - Jane GASKIN to James and Mary GASKIN 2 September 1821 - Elizabeth GASKIN to James and Mary GASKIN It looks like there were twins. If as you say James' mother was Elizabeth, is it possible that the correct Mary JACKSON is the last one of the four above, whose mother was Jane, suggesting that twin girls were named for their two grandmothers? Just a theory but perhaps one to consider. Maybe it would be worth asking the list if someone is able to check out Kirkby parish register at Northallerton CRO, for the exact details of the GASKIN christenings on 2 Sep. 1821, there may be more information there to give you a clue. When you've pinned down the right Mary get back to me, I might be able to help with earlier JACKSON's.
