Morning! I am trying to track down the offspring of School Masters Thomas Sayer and John Sayer who lived in the Ainsty area in the mid 19th century. John Sayer ( b 1819 Nun Monkton, son of Thomas Sayer and grandson of Michael and Rebecca Sayer of Hutton Bonville) worked as a schoolmaster at Hutton (1841) . John's younger brother, Thomas (b 1829), was also a schoolmaster, indeed at one point they ran a school together at Skipwith (1851). Both John and Thomas were still unmarried in 1851, but one of the pupils at Skipwith school was 12 year old William Volans, and interestingly John married his older sister, Ellen Volans, at Selby in 1854. The couple went on to have at least 3 children at Nether Poppleton near York but no record of John and Ellen can currently be found after 1861. John's brother Thomas Sayer moved on to run an establishment on his own by 1861 at Heworth, Yorkshire, and married Esther Appleton (1873). He died 1893 at Harrogate. I believe that only one of John and Ellen's children ,survived to adulthood Thomas Sayer (b 1859 Nether Poppleton). He appears to have done well for himself - the 1881 and 1891 census returns note that he was a manufacturor of steel pins. Thomas married Clara Cox (1886 Bradfield?). No record can be found of Thomas and Clara in the 1901 census. Do any of these names ring a bell, do you have any more information on any of them or their descendents? Would love to know as they would be direct descendents of my ggg greatgrandfather Michael Sayer and Rebecca (nee Sunman)! Cheers laurel sayer
