Hello Roz & all , By looking through all my papers I have uncovered more information about my SMITH family that once lived in Thirsk. My John & Jane SMITH of Thirsk plus children immigrated to the USA in 1818. They also traveled with John's mother, Elizabeth BROWN and also the George BELL family. (John Smith's father was Thomas Smith 1741-1789 Thirsk.) Other information which I just located is as follows: Enclosure AWARD dated 1797. This went to William SMITH born 1733 died 1812, batchelor. William was a butcher, brother to Thomas SMITH born 1741-died 1789. Their father was William SMITH of Thirsk, died 1754--July 2. Now the Enclosure AWARD of 1797 lists William SMITH a tenant of Sir Thomas FRANKLAND of Thirkleby Hall. William Smith's award consists of 4 messuages in Long Street, together with a Garth and a Close. Question: The person that found this information for me back in 2004 seems to tell me that this land of Long Street, of this award --tells me that this allotments adjoining those awarded to Wm SMITH are held by the Society of Methodists. My question to you, does anyone know if this Long Street still has cottages today possibly used by the Methodists or are they adjoining to the Methodists land? Looking forward in hearing your thoughts. Kind regards, Margaret Long Maryland, USA ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
