    1. [ENG-NORTH-YORKS] meaning of Copy hold
    2. Hello, I have a copy of a WILL dated 1813 for William SMITH b. 1733 Thirsk. In his will the 'copy hold' at Knayton is given to another family person. This copy hold was William Smith and his late brother Thomas Smith --- (they had it together in ownership) I would be grateful for any ideas you may have on this term. Thank you Margaret L. 3. >From a website: The usual system of tenancy was called 'Copyhold Tenancy', because the stewards made a 'copy' of a document listing the services or money by which each tenant held his land. British History online has a glossary offering definitions of lots of obscure terms!
