I use find my past or free BMD websites, the find my past one is good up to 2005 I think but not a free site, free BMD only until about 1910. If they were in a town then UK BMD website county links will give you any online indexes for that town. Dates are variable for all counties and towns and some are just not online yet Find my past has direct links to the GRO site. Hi all: freeBMD I have found to be about the most reliable. Ancestry will give you the refs but they simply reproduce freeBMD information and it is not updated as frequently as the original site. I am helping in the freeBMD transcriptions and our team is currently doing 1927 births, so you may find coverage patchy after 1910 or thereabouts. If not covered one of the paid for websites like find my past is the only option for a GRO ref. The UKbmd website will tell you if your area of interest has a local authority website you might try, but bear in mind in this case you will get the local registrar's reference, so you have to apply there, not to GRO for the certificate as the refs bear no relation to one another. Even if there is no local online service, if you have sufficient details, it might be worth contacting the registrar direct (possibly by e mail) to see if they will find the certificate for you. I have had some success doing this where the GRO index is not available or insufficiently clear.
