    3. Hi, I've recently discovered that one of my ancestors was in prison at the time the 1801 Census was taken in Loftus. Can anyone help with advice on where to look next to find out where he was in prison and what for? Many thanks, Gillian (Smith)

    3. Assuming you mean 1901 I would think the local newspapers would be your best and easiest bet although there must be Court archives as well somewhere Sheila -----Original Message----- From: eng-north-yorks-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-north-yorks-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of R Smith Sent: 30 May 2008 13:09 To: eng-north-yorks@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-NORTH-YORKS] ADVICE PLEASE Hi, I've recently discovered that one of my ancestors was in prison at the time the 1801 Census was taken in Loftus. 3. Hi Sheila, No, I do mean 1801. It was taken at the time when it was feared the French troops may attempt an invasion of the North East Coast. Parish Constables were required to supply information about numbers of people willing to hep with defence arrangements or who would help if an area had to be evacuated. The Loftus constable wrote down much more information than was required of him and this is where the information that my ancestor was in prison comes from. Thank you for your help though, Gillian ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sheila" <sheila.harris@wanadoo.fr> To: <eng-north-yorks@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 30, 2008 1:44 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-NORTH-YORKS] ADVICE PLEASE > Assuming you mean 1901 I would think the local newspapers would be your > best > and easiest bet although there must be Court archives as well somewhere > Sheila > > -----Original Message----- > From: eng-north-yorks-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:eng-north-yorks-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of R Smith > Sent: 30 May 2008 13:09 > To: eng-north-yorks@rootsweb.com > Subject: [ENG-NORTH-YORKS] ADVICE PLEASE > > > Hi, > > I've recently discovered that one of my ancestors was in prison at the > time > the 1801 Census was taken in Loftus. 3. Hi Gillian, > I've recently discovered that one of my ancestors was in prison at > the time > the 1801 Census was taken in Loftus. Can anyone help with advice on > where to > look next to find out where he was in prison and what for? If he was in prison for debt, you may find him on The London Gazette website if it is still offering free access: http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/AdvancedSearch.aspx? GeoType=London&st=adv&sb=date&FDay=1&FMth=1&FYr=1810&TDay=29&TMth=12&TYr =1890&all=canada&exact=ramsbottom (That is all one line) The LG doesn't deal with criminal cases but it includes a wide range of financial matters, military commissions and promotions, honours and awards, from the mid 1600s onwards. Good hunting! Jim Balmer
