    1. [ENG-NORTH-YORKS] Pronunciation of Levisham
    2. Zoe Toft
    3. Hello all, I have a relative, Gawan (Gawin) Pinkney, b. about 1814 in Yorkshire. On the 1851 census his birth place is listed as "Leason". Could this be a pronunciation of Levisham? (You can tell I'm not from Yorkshire!). I've found the following record on the IGI: GAWAN PINKNEY Pedigree Male Event(s): Birth: Christening: 27 SEP 1813 Levisham, Yorkshire, England Death: Burial: Parents: Father: JOSEPH PINKNEY Family Mother: ANN Messages: Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. Many thanks Zoe

    3. I have relatives who left North Elmham Norfolk in the early 1860's moved first to Ferryhill and then to West Hartlepool there names were Tombling and Peart. One family moved to Eston to work in the mines and the remainder stayed in West Hartlepool. Another surname is Francis. I believe CFHS published information about families moving from Norfolk to Mbro. I am particularly interested in the Tomblings as it is an unusual name, am willing to share my info ----- Original Message ---- From: "eng-north-yorks-request@rootsweb.com" <eng-north-yorks-request@rootsweb.com> To: eng-north-yorks@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, January 31, 2008 2:05:14 AM Subject: ENG-NORTH-YORKS Digest, Vol 3, Issue 16 Today's Topics: 1. I would love to hear from anyone descended from these families, or others from the same area. I am doing a one-name study on the Cranness family, so any information there would help me enormously. 3. We are probably looking for a needle in a haystack, but if anyone can help, we would appreciate it. My husband would like to know if anybody has any knowledge/details of a James PRATT, or the PRATT family from the Swaledale area of North Yorkshire, who may have migrated to New Zealand around 1851. He would have been approximately 31 years of age when he migrated. He married Ellen DUFFELL in New Zealand on 27 Sep 1864, and died in 1911. If anyone can access the 1841/1851 census for us, that might have some detail. Many thanks Ailsa Petrie -- Hamilton New Zealand

    3. Hi Zoe, I love a puzzle and having just spent days looking at films of parish registers, my eye is in a bit, but this is a challenge, isn't it? I haven't got time to do much now, but can get further than you with the first paragraph: "On Thursday last some time in the afternoon was the last time I saw deceased alive. He was at my house/home? about half an hour. He had ....about his trial which was to come off on Friday. He had been summoned before the magistrate by his wife Mary Plews for an assault. He seemed to be somewhat...about her?? and the trial. He left us....He said.....Yesterday morning my mother came and called me out saying "I believe our David has hanged himself." I went ...John Tomlin....and we found him hanging from a ladder in the Castle. He was quite dead. He had his clothes on but one shoe was only....on. John Plews. I can read a fair bit of the rest and will send my attempts at that later, when I get more time. 2. Julie Goulden
    3. Hi My first post to the list - just wondering if anyone out there is seeking information about LYNN/ SADLER/GREENBANK families? The information I have is as follows: William Lynn Born about 1760 at West Tanfield, North Yorks, married Mary (his second wife; previously had been married to Anne GILET).Wm and Mary's children were John LYNN 1782 and Elizabeth LYNN 1788 both born at Well, North Riding John LYNN married Jane ASKQUITH in 1802 at Well, North Riding. Their children were William 1808, Thomas ?1805 and John ?1805 (the latter both later employed as butchers) - all born at Well William LYNN married Dorothy GREENBANK (daughter of Anthony GREENBANK and Mary MERINTON) and they had 8 children - Jane 1829, Mary 1831, Bessy 1834, Jane b/d 1837, Dorothy b 1838, Ann 1841, John, b1843, William b 1847. Again, they were all born at Well. Dorothy died in 1849 and he married Mary HUNTER. William Lynn was employed as a shepherd. He lived at a place called Moss Cottage in 1881. John (b1843) married Margaret ? and later married Harriet SADLER (of Kirklington) at Bedale in 1892. John and Harriet's son Ernest LYNN b 1893 was my great grandfather. I am looking for any information about these families. I am also interested in Well, given that my family remained there for so many years. I have "googled" the place but wonder if anyone can give me an impression of what it is like? Also - I'm interested in what a shepherd's life would have been like in the mid 1800s (hard, I would imagine!)?? Regards Julie
