Dear Jo Thanks for your interest I am trying to find a William Walker my GGdad ,my Gdad was a Joseph Walker b1873 at MIDDLESBROUGH but his older brothers where born in Flaxton on the 81 census James was a glass cutter. I wonder if your James had a father William(a groom) I look forward to hearing from you .Your letter was very interesting best wishes from a warm very very dry Melbourne Wendy -----Original Message----- From: Josephine Green [mailto:jo.green54@btopenworld.com] Sent: Sunday, 23 March 2003 12:45 AM To: ENG-NORTH-YORKS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [N'Yorks] Interests Dear Wendy, I live not far from Sand Hutton, and actually went to the Primary School there. Sand Hutton Hall used to belong to a James Walker (quite famous in the area) and a couple of years ago a 'history' of Sand Hutton was compiled by the villagers. I'm not sure if this is the James Walker you are looking for but if it is I could probably get you a copy of the book which has some interesting information about the village in it. Sand Hutton Hall was demolished some years ago and now has a few 'modern' houses built on the site. A local man also wrote a history about Sand Hutton Hall - I could try and find a copy of that for you too. Incidentally, from 1958 to 1993 my parents lived in a house built by James Walker in 1888 - it was, and still is, a very unusual and quirky house - reflecting his eccentricity. He also had his own railway on the estate - remains of which can still be seen. I can also go to the local Church - St Mary's at Sand Hutton and have a look at the inscriptions in the Church - I seem to remember there are some to the Walker family. If you think any of this might be of interest let me know! I've found them on the 1881 census but I just want to check whether Mary Jane was actually resident at some place in Church Street or had given it as a one-off address of convenience instead of, eg, the Boggs Yard Workhouse following the birth of her child. There seem to be several families of Dixons in and around Church Street, largely involved in the jet manufacturing trade, which seems to confirm family oral history that some of the Whitby lot were involved in it. I'm aware of a Mary Jane Dixon who was born in Whitby c1844 and of one who married in 1872, ie the year after the birth of Annie. It's tempting to think of them as one and the same, but I prefer to check rather than assume :) Regards STC
Susan I don't have access to the 1871 census , but in the Index to the Whitby 1851 census on folio 225 there is a Mary J. Dixon age 6. Also on the same folio there are;- Ann 49, George 4, Hannah 1, John 44, Judith 22, Margaret 22, Maria 60, Martha 42, Mary 24, Patrick 3, and Thomas 18. All born Whitby except Maria who was born Egton. There is another Dixon family on the next folio no. 226. May be worth looking at this Census if you haven't already done so. Jo/Wendy I have also transcribed some stuff regarding Sand Hutton Hall and it has been put on the GENUKI site for Yorkshire. See http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/Transcriptions/NRY/SandHuttonHall.html there are others bits and pieces, and if you look on the general page for Bossall (Sand Hutton, and Flaxton, together with about 6 or 7 other villages, were in Bossall parish) http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/NRY/Bossall/index.html you will see some more transcripts I went to primary school in Sand Hutton, (as did my brother and sister - and going further back, so did my father and his sister). My father lives in Buttercrambe, so I know the area pretty well too, although I don't have the ease of access that Jo does, as I now live about 120 miles away. Hi, Would anyone who has access to the 1841 Census for Snilesworth be kind enough to check for William Chapman. His wife should be Dinah, but I don't know who else was living with them. Many thanks Lynda
Hi, David I think the book is now out of print but if you wanted a copy you could perhaps search the "net". I have checked it for Whitwells and am sorry to say that there are no references to them. Mary

Hi Jenny; The parents of my immigrant ancestor were married 17 Oct 1754 in Coverham Trinity Church. They were John GELDART and Mary RUNDAR/RUNDAR. John was of Carleton and Mary was said to have been of Little or East Scrafton and I'm speculating that her father may have been Matthew and there MAY have been some connection to Spinnithorp. I have had very little opportunity to research the RUNDAR/RUNDER family and have had no previous contact with anyone who have indicated a family interest. Your post is quite exciting. I would appreciate any correspondence. I have some Coverdale information that may connect. Hi Grenville,Charles James Todd born near Whitby 1886 apprentice boiler maker with William Grey &C0.(Hartlepool?) .3years with Durham Light Infantry. Received medallion from person he saved off South Pier(Hartlepool?) 4-6-1904. Migrated to South Australia with brother between 1904 -1914.Joined AIF(Australian Imperial Force) 1915 and served in Middle East. His parents,John born 1843 and Emma born 1853? followed to Sth.Aust. prior to 1915. We are asuming that CJ who gave his birth place on enlistment to AIF as near Whitby ,may have moved with parents to West ?Hartlepool .Is this where William Grey &co.operated? We have found birth dates of his parents in cemetary at Cheltenham SA .We have sent this information many times to North Yorks list and am now clutching at straws If you can help we would be most Grateful. Dear Listers I would appreciate it if SKS could do a look up for me on the 1861 census. I am trying to find out more information on my 2 x g grandfather Robert Hurworth. I know he was married at Leake, North Yorkshire on May 13th 1862 to Ann Todd. Both occupations were given as 'servant' - presumably at Leake Hall and I am hoping they will be on the 1861 census return for the hall. Their first child John was baptised at Catterick on July 22nd 1863. As yet I am unable to establish where both Robert or Ann were born. Many thanks. Libby
