    3. Hi Sandra I would very much like to see your information listed. I have ancestors that lived in the Gillamoor area between 1800-1900 possibly longer. My curiosity is just about overwhelming. My intrest is in the SHEPHERDS in Gillimoor but would carry over to Farndale as I have references to this area as well. Hope you could help me out here. 3. Lynn Thanks for your message. HILL Samuel Hill (b.1816 Hull) came to Whitby around the late 1840s with his first wife Jane (nee Wilson). Jane died and he married Mary Readman at Brunswick St. Methodist Chapel, Whitby in 1862, and they had a number of children including Matthew Readman Hill (1865), Samuel (1867), John (1870), James (1873), George (1875) & Alfred (1880). Matthew Readman Hill was my late wife's great grandfather. COOPER Thomas Cooper (b.c.1764) married Mary Yeoman at Lythe 1790. Thomas was a blacksmith at West Barnby. Amongst their children were, Thomas, Moses, Aaron, Yeoman, Thomasine,Alice, Jane & Hannah. The son Thomas (b.1799 West Barnby) was an Ag Lab. He married Catherine Lyth(e)in 1821 and they moved to Loftus and then to Marske. Their daughter Jane (b Marske 1828) married George Kitching at Marske in 1849 and they moved to Whitby, where George was a Taxidermist and well known for carrying and discharging his gun on the beach (for which he got into trouble a few times). They were the great grandparents of my late wife. Also Alice daughter of Thomas Cooper & Mary (Yeoman) had an illigitimate daughter Jane in 1826 at Loftus. Jane became the second wife of my late wife's ancestor John David Devonshire, Jet Manufaturer in Whitby and Scarborough. 1. [N'Yorks] Re: Wykeham
    2. Hi Marvin, Can find no reference to a Wickham nor Wickham Hall in the Seats of the gentry for 1822-3. Wykeham is certainly the closest. Wykeham Abbey, the mansion named after the abbey ruins in the village of Wykeham, has been in the ownership of the Dawnay family since at least the mid- 1800s (the present parish church was built by Viscount Downe in the 1850s, and the current Viscount still lives there). In 1822 Wykeham Abbey was owned by the LANGLEY family. Also checked the 1673 HearthTax list, but again the closest is "Wikeham com Ruston" (i.e. Wykeham). No BARBER in the village, nor anyone called Luke, though there are two or three by name of PARKER, a Widow BAKER and a Widow BANKES. Those with the highest number of hearths are: Edw. HUTCHINSON (who had 14 and "6 more for the East Hall") Mr. CHAPMAN - 8 Wm. SAWDON - 4 Niccol. WILKINSON - 3 Wm. MARSHALL - 3 Not much help, I'm afraid. Best wishes, Roz

    3. Laurence I have just noticed your interest in Oxley. I know that a Captain David White, merchant nany, married an Ann Oxley I think around the 1840s or 1850s. The reason I know this is that I confused this family for a while with my wife's Captain David White & wife Ann (Banks). I don't think, though, that this David White was connected to the Whites I mentioned in my previous message. Regards Bob Sanders Cardiff Wales -----Original Message----- From: Laurence J. 3. Dear listers, It was a lovely day today and we did what family historyites do-went to Churchyards!-Gillamoor and Farndale in North Yorkshire. We have no ancestors around here at all but while we were there we wrote down all the surnames on the stones. (Compulsive or what!) We listed seperately the more recent names in the little cemeteries- though,of course, many are the same.. We will happily post these indexes (indeces?) to the list if it is OK with the list owners (there will be living descendants and we don't want to upset anyone.) If anyone wants the actual Inscriptions we will go up again and get the detail/a photo on the next lovely day! These may have already been transcribed by someone but never mind. 3. Hello Bob, Query re: the White name. I have a little piece of paper, stuck in an old family album, that says that "Uncle & Aunt White from Worksop came." There is no date and the families I'm connected to in that area who might have been related are most likely Wood or Wilson families. Are you aware of any Worksop (Nottinghamshire) connection to any of your White's who might have been visiting in NRY sometime last century?
