    1. [N'Yorks] Grocery shop in Eston, Middlesbrough
    2. The 1890 Bulmer's Trade Directory for Middlesbrough showed a "Christopher Ellerton, 35 Nelson Street, South Bank" as running a Grocery shop in Eston. This is almost certainly my George Christopher Ellerton who was described in the 1881 Census as a Grocer. Can any lister who lives in the area tell me more about this shop? Does the address/shop still exist? TIA, Bob (Cambridge) -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ .

    1. [N'Yorks] Harland in 1861 Census for Marske,Loftus,Skinningrove area
    2. Hi Everybody, I am looking for John HARLAND and his wife Alice in the 1861 census for the above areas. An earlier lookup request for Marske failed to produce a result, hence the widening of the search. I know John's daughter, Jane, was in Skinningrove in 1881. John would be about 61 and Alice about 64. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Bryan Cooper

To: SOUTH-AFRICA-IMMIGRANTS-BRITISH-L@rootsweb.com, SOUTH-AFRICA-L@rootsweb.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: CompuServe 2000 32-bit sub 107 Hoping some-one can steer me in the correct direction. In 1908 my Father, Charles Frederick RENNEY, who was living at Germiston, Old Transvaaal, after going to South Africa from England, with the South African Constabulary, and his wife, Margaret GLOVER ROSS, who was born near Pietermaritzburg, [spelling ?] and over 8 months pregnant at the time, travelled to England to visit his family for 6 weeks? On the trip over she gave birth to twin boys on the ship. Do not know the name of the ship. While in the UK they stayed at Middlesbrough, N. Yorks. where the twins births were registered, which seemed odd to me as his family was at Stranton,West Hartlepool, although these two places are not far apart I wonder why he stayed there. Also, when they left to return to South Africa , they took a little boy with them, am told that after they arrived at their home at Germiston, the boy lived with them as one of the family and my Father had the child's surname changed to RENNEY. Am trying to discover who this boy was, his surname after it was changed was Arthur RENNEY, but have no idea what it was before. Arthur RENNEY lived the rest of his life in South Africa, married, raised a family, and died there. My Father's first wife in the UK had died at age 19years, [she was from Middlesbrough,N. Yorks], before he joined the South African Constabulary. Had originally thought the boy may have been a child he had with her and she had died in childbirth, but now have discovered she died of TB. 5 months after their marriage. What I am asking is, are there any records in South Africa that would show the previous surname of a child whose surname had been changed to RENNEY. It seems the purpose of the trip was to pick up the child, which must have been important, otherwise why would he take a woman who was ready to deliver on such a trip. Have racked my brain over this, but the people who could give me answers are all dead. Hoping there may be some type of record in South Africa re. the name change. Feel he may have been a half-brother to me. Any help gratefully received, Pam [RENNEY] McKinley in Arizona. --part1_1d5.6682033.2bbad0b6_boundary--

    3. I have hit the proverbial brick wall. My grandfather, FRANCIS (FRANK) LINSLEY, was a coal merchant and toymaker in Gurney Street, Darlington, in 1881. His wife was ANN GANNON. (so far, so good!) They married in 1872 in Darlington. Francis, who was born in MALTON, is 24 years on his marriage cert, (but 36 years in 1881, making his year of birth around 1844 to 1848) gave his address as North Road, Darlington, and his father is also FRANCIS LINSLEY, a farmer. How many LINSLEYS in MALTON? And there's Old Malton and New Malton. What's all that about? Are there any LINSLEYS out there? Now ANN GANNON's no better. She is 32 on the 1881 Census, (but 21 on her marriage cert).JOHN GANNON, a labourer, is named as her father on the marriage certificate. I found JOHN GANNON (53 yrs) and his wife ELLEN (56 yrs) on the 1881 Census. They were both born in County Mayo! They had at least three other children: Thomas Gannon (1858/1859), John W Gannon (1862/1863) and Mary E Gannon ((1871/1872). 1. [N'Yorks] Re: Property records at Northallerton
    2. Greetings, > I am sure that North Yorks County Record Office has some > form of land ownership documents The Record Office holds the records of the North Yorkshire Registry of Deeds, dating from the 1740s (second oldest such registry in the country, after Middlesex). They are indexed, but are, I believe, recorded under the name of the recipient of the property rather than the vendor. There are also land tax records and estate maps in the archive; it would be worth enquiring at Northallerton to check whether there is a copy of the tithe map and apportionment among these documents, which would list the owners of land field by field and give the state of cultivation. Hope this helps. Best wishes, Roz

    1. [N'Yorks] Cordwainer
    2. Mike Hutchinson
    3. We need to be a bit careful here - this is a contemporary US association, and may not be applicable to the trade of "cordwainer" in the period and area of interest in UK. My understanding was that the title "cordwainer" was protected by a guild, and that it required a guild-approved apprenticeship to be completed to become a "cordwainer". The title of "master" is usually used to refer to one who took apprenticeships for this purpose. Thus, the widow of a cordwainer could inherit his tools and even his business, but could not herself become a cordwainer without undergoing an apprenticeship...and I had thought that they were not then open to women or girls. This, of course does not mean that women could not make shoes as skilfully as men...just that they faced obstacles in getting training and recognition. 2. Hello Doreen Spring is in the air in Oakville again after a long cold winter. My William Robinson born 1825 had a brother named Stephen Robinson born in 1822. I have not found a Stephen Robinson in the family of William's father, Joseph Robinson. I had surmised that the name Stephen had come from their mother's side (Ann Pattison) as her father was Stephen Pattison. Stephen Pattison married Margaret Horsley at Felixkirk, North Yorkshire in 1785. I have noticed in the Malton Messenger BMD posted by Andrew Sefton, the name "Botterill". It was at Pexton Boterill's farm in 1850 in Perth County, Ontario that my ancestor William Robinson met his wife Jane Ann Barley who was born at Newby Wiske North Yorkshire in 1835 and had arrived in Canada by 1850. I believe that Pexton Botterill was also from North Yorkshire. 3. Hi Clare, I have the CHAPMANs of Hawnby on my family tree at www.cornforth.org or www.jussy.co.uk I do have an Ellen CHAPMAN but she married into my Cornforth family in 1859. I have quite a lot of resources for Hawnby including the BT's and Parish Records. I have just arrived back from a week in Yorkshire but once I get unpacked I will have a look and see if I can find anything on the property concerned to help you. Just as a thought I am sure that North Yorks County Record Office has some form of land ownership documents. I have never looked personally but I am sure that the moveable shelves there contain land records. Have you also checked all the census returns? In each one, 1841-1901, there is a chance that the property and occupants are named. I will look at the ones that I have here for you.
