    2. bmayes
    3. First I'd like to thank everybody who answered my plea for help with my military problem. I received some really good leads. Now I would like to know if anybody else out there is researching the "Floyds" Father------------Frederick Floyd, born 1892 in Flaxton, Yk G. Father--------Stephen James Floyd, born 1861 in Portsea, Hamp. G.G. Father-----Stephen Floyd, born 1833 in Havant, Hamp. G.G.G, Father--William Floyd, born abt. 1788 in Hamp. As you can see, I am stuck at William. Have searched a number of parish registers around the Havant area but, no luck so far. Are there any Floyds out there looking for the same ancestors? Love to hear from you! Lillian from Canada E-mail bmayes@bmts.com

    1. RE: [N'Yorks] RUSSELL
    2. Hi Jo I have noticed that you are researching "Russells" around the areas that I have connections myself. I am currently researching the 'Descendants of William Barker, Ayton, Yorkshire'. William Barker's daughter Mary married Ralph Benton, they had several children, Elizabeth Benton married William Boville. This is where my Russell connections is. William & Elizabeth Boville's daughter Mary Elizabeth married Nathaniel Russell of Russells, Greengrocer of Northallerton. I have a photograph of him and her. As in 1914 a book containing these descendants was published and contained photographs. From a newspaper clippings book the following newspaper article:- "A change has just taken place with regard to the old-established grocery and provisions business and seed and manure trade carried on for the last 57 years by Messrs. N. Russell and Sons, at Northallerton. This flourishing business has during the past day or two been formed into a limited liability company, the new managers of which are Mr. Nathaniel Russell, Mr. Francis William Ketlewell, and Mr. Lewis William Atlay. The two last gentlemn, who will manage the concern, served their apprenticeship with the late Mr. Nathaniel Russell and Mr. Nathaniel Russell, jnr. Mr. Kettlewell has been over 20 years with the firm, while Mr. Atlay has been eight and a half years. the new firm will now be known as Messrs. N. Russell and Son, Ltd. " Date hand written next to article says April 11 1904. Unknown which newspaper. Are these the Russells you are researching? If so please get in touch. 3. Hi Jo, You don't have a Simeon Russell at Kirbymoorside do you? I have found a baptism with his name on on the IGI and wonder if he ties up with my Russells of Northallerton who had one or two Simeons amongst them. My Russell go back to 1670ish in Hawnby NRY and gradually they moved until the ended up in Northallerton High Street. There is a Simeon in Northallerton trade directories who worked with plumbing and such, does that mean anything to you? Regards Jenny DeAngelis. Spain. 3. I have finally tracked down a birth certificate for my Great Grandfather who was always known as FRANCIS LINSLEY, but was registered as FRANK LINSLEY. He was born on 18 December 1849 at Ropery Road, Parish of Old Malton, the son of FRANCIS LINSLEY and SARAH ANN LINSLEY. Has anyone got access to the 1851 Census? I am hoping that they are still at the same address, and it might tell me if there are any other children. I do not know if Francis and Sarah Linsley were from Malton. 3. Hi Lynn, As Charles Russell said he and I are both researching the surname Russell in the North Riding of Yorkshire. I don't recognise your James Russell or Hannah, though I have a few Hannah Russells in my family but not at Stokesley. Have you found Hannah on any of the census? Do you know roughly when James Russell, Hannah's father, was lost at sea? If her father was a captain then he may have had a master's ticket, he should have had one but not all "captains" bothered with them in the early days. The LDS have films of Masters Tickets details etc., and there is a helpful website dealing with mariner information and how to find out about them at. http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/ have a read of this site to gain some insight into the subject. You will also find that the LDS have films of the Bishops Transcripts for Stokesley and you could order the relevant film to check the details of that baptism you found on the IGI for Hannah. Go back to the IGI entry online and click on the Source Call No. link to enable you to find the relevant film number to order. Hope this is helpful Regards Jenny DeAngelis. Spain. > Hi, I'm new to the list and would like some help. 2. Sandra Wilson
    3. Today we went a-wandering on the North Yorkshire Moors and had a look in All Saints Church, Hawnby. There we picked up an information sheet which contained the following. I do hope the writer does not mind me quoting this grand story- "Why is the village of Hawnby in two halves? This we do know. One fine summers day in the mid 18th century two Hawnby men called CHAPMAN and CORNFORTH were labouring up on the Moor. Having had some lunch, they lay down to snooze. But when they awoke and compared notes it turned out that they had both dreamed vivid dreams that God had spoken to them to repent and be converted. That evening they spoke to their friend JOHN HUGILL, a farmer at Ladhill Gill and found that he was feeling the same way. Then, as they were wondering what to do about it, a newspaper announced that the famous Preacher, John Wesley was to preach in Newcastle upon Tyne. The three men set off along the drove road North. They walked all the way to Newcastle (At an Inn on the way it is recorded that they tasted tea for the first time and liked it!) They heard John Wesley and walked home again- the first Methodists in the neighbourhood. Mr TANCRED of Arden Hall, their landlord, was a Church Of England Man and did not approve of Methodists. He immediately expelled them from their homes up on the hill. The only place they could settle was down by the bridge. On July 7th 1757 John Wesley recorded in his diary how he 'rode from Osmotherly over one of the pleasantest parts of England to Hawnby'. He remarked that the 'zealous' landlord action had turned out to be a 'singular kindness' as it had served to create such a vibrant little community of 40 or 50 Methodists all living together there" Sandra Wilson

    3. Some time ago, on one of the northern lists, someone posted an interest in the name MINTOFT (around Kirkbymoorside?) Today I was wandering around All Saints, Hawnby Churchyard (about 15 miles NW of Kirkbymoorside on the North Yorkshire Moors) when I noticed this gravestone - ISABEL wife of JAMES MINTOFT of Arden and daughter of FRANCIS and MARY ANN BRADSHAW, late of Swinton, born April 9 1887. Died July 21 1904 Also JAMES MINTOFT husband of the above died December 23 1914 aged 40 It is an unusual name so I thought I would post it in the hope that whoever it was would see it. I thought about looking in the list archives then realised I have no idea how to find them! Sandra Wilson
