    1. [N'Yorks] Amazingly detailed will
    2. dhking
    3. I have recently added a transcript of the will of Margaret PRESSICK, spinster, of Whitby (proved 1841) to my site http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dhking/probate/prissick/WillMargaretPressick1841.htm This is an amazing example of the value of the wills of those who die childless, and who for that reason often list many more family members than parents, who of course often only list their own children. I believe Margaret to have been the daughter of Samuel Pressick & Elizabeth Jackson, baptised in 1761, making her a grand old age when she died. I wonder if anyone tracing Whitby families in the late 18th early 19 centuries can help to place the following relatives, many of whom must have been fairly distant. I assume the term 'cousin' is rather more extended than the general meaning today of first cousin, as I cannot place any of the cousins as known first cousins, and wonder if anyone can offer a contemporary definition for the term 'relation'? The following are listed as cousins (note all suggested baptism/marriages are at Whitby): Margaret Lacy Elizabeth Lacy Jonathan Lacy (who had six daughters) Rosina Lacy Catherine Lacy, wife of John Adamson William Lacy Thomas Lacy Margaret Chadwick Mary Wilkinson (nee Lacy, dec'd, Did she marry Henry Wilkinson 1794 ?) Edward Cayley (is he the EC baptised 1782, s. of Edward Cayley & Mary Brown?) John Chapman Esther Merchant (nee Harrison) Rev Thomas Alexander Brown Charles Brown George Brown Susan MacDowell Jessy Fenton (dec'd) Margaret Gossip The following are relations: Sarah Wilkinson widow of George Wilkinson (is she the Sarah Brown who married GW 1802) Elizabeth Spencer, Son Thomas Pressick & daughter Rebecca Dodd (I believe that she may be the Elizabeth Pressick who had an illegitimate son Thomas baptised in 1794, married William Spencer 1796, whose daughter Rebecca baptised 1798 - interstingly, a likely candidate would be Margaret Pressick's younger sister, but would she really only call her a relation?) These others are also mentioned, but with no reference to relationship to MP: John Eskdale (there may be a link to the Lacys via the marriage of Thomas Lacy and Euphemia Eskdale?) Joseph Anderson (& late wife Esther Harrison) John Harrison Esther Knaggs (sister to above John Harrison) Esther Groves w. of Robert Groves ( is she nee Eskdale, married 1814?) Mary Winn w. of Mark Winn (is she Mary Hall, married 1819?) Any thoughts much appreciated, Dave

    3. Hi Jo, We have been in touch recently regarding our connections to the Russells of Northallerton and I wonder if you can give me a marriage date for your Nathaniel Russel to Mary Elizabeth Boville so that I can add the marriage to my tree. My connection is through your Nathaniel Russells Great Aunt Ann Russell, my Gt. Gt. Grandmother, who was herself the daughter of an earlier Nathaniel and his wife H annah STAINTHORP, Richard Thompson and I share Hannah's parents as out common ancestor as you know. I have a total of four Nathaniel Russells in my tree if I can help you out with any information on these earlier ones then just ask. By the way the Russells owned a Grocers not a Greengrocers they also ran a café in the shop next to the grocer shop. I have a couple of photos of both shops in a book of old photos of Northallerton, one shop is now houses a branch Superdrug. I was interested to read the extract from the newspaper about the business. Regards Jenny DeAngelis. Spain. William Boville. This is where my Russell connections is. William & Elizabeth Boville's daughter Mary Elizabeth married Nathaniel Russell of Russells, Greengrocer of Northallerton. I have a photograph of him and her. > > As in 1914 a book containing these descendants was published and contained photographs. From a newspaper clippings book the following newspaper article:- > > "A change has just taken place with regard to the old-established > grocery and provisions business and seed and manure trade > carried on for the last 57 years by Messrs. 2. Nancy Vogt
    3. Helen: I truly wish I could help you since you have been so much help to me over the past year or two. I have found that the naming patterns have been very helpful particularly when the same ones are used over and over again in the following generations. I note that there is no "Ann" or "Francis" among the children listed for Thomas and Isabella. Perhaps this is entirely due to the nature of the birth of Thomas that he failed to name a child after his father or mother. If the names occur in the HOPPS family, it might suggest a connection, however, circumstantial. Nancy Vogt WI, USA My web page: http://community.webtv.net/nanspage

    1. [N'Yorks] Thomas TUNSTALL of Northallerton
    2. Helen Oram
    3. Hello, I would be grateful for any ideas on how to confirm that this is my lost relation. I have a "Bastardy Bond" for a presumed illegitimate son of one of my HOPPS ancestors. This child, Thomas TUNSTALL, was the son of Ann TUNSTALL and Francis HOPPS, was born 1802, and raised in the workhouse at Hurworth on Tees, DUR. At the age of 12 he was apprenticed to a cartwright at Middleton St George. After then I have lost him. There is no burial in the 1813-39 DUR index, and no marriage in DUR for those years either. A Thomas TUNSTALL turns up in Northallerton YKS,in the 1820's, married to Isabella, and has a family as follows: GEORGE TUNSTALL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 11 OCT 1829 Northallerton, Yorkshire, England MARY ANN TUNSTALL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 27 MAY 1832 Northallerton, Yorkshire, England REBECCA TUNSTALL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 07 DEC 1834 Northallerton, Yorkshire, England ELIZABETH TONSTALL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 20 AUG 1837 Northallerton, Yorkshire, England THOMAS TUNSTALL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 27 MAR 1842 Northallerton, Yorkshire, England ISABELLA TUNSTALL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 12 OCT 1845 Northallerton, Yorkshire, England WILLIAM HENRY TUNSTALL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 01 FEB 1848 Northallerton, Yorkshire, England MARIA JANE TUNSTALL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 18 MAR 1850 Northallerton, Yorkshire, England HARRIET TUNSTAL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 07 MAY 1854 Northallerton, Yorkshire, England In 1834 he is a "machine maker", according to Pigot's directory. I am assuming agricultural equipment of some sort at this date. In the 1851 census this Thomas is of the right age to be mine, and states he was born in Darlington. On the Apprenticeship record of 1814, my Thomas's mother, Ann TUNSTALL is noted as living in Darlington. There is no baptism in Darlington St Cuthberts for a Thomas TUNSTALL.... so, do you think on balance of probabilities that the Thomas living in Northallerton is likely to be my stray from the workhouse? I would also be very pleased to hear from anyone researching any of the above people. Regards, -- Helen Oram
