Dear Rose, I have a lot of Clark's in Marske from this period back. James Clark c 11 Jun 1797 in Marske. Father Joseph Clark, farmer, Marsk. James moved away from Marske although his brother William stayed around the area and was a shoemaker in Marske. Their father Joseph Clark was cihristened 6 Jun 1762, Marske son of Joseph Clark. He married Mary Cuthbert 27 Jul 1786 at Marske. I've seen your Robert Clark in the PR transcripts and possibly on the census, but I've never made a definite connection. I'll dig out what I have and let you have it. Maybe you can find a link! Andrew

    1. [N'Yorks] Re: HOLMES of Cundall
    2. Hi Carole, I don't have the 1851 census for Cundall, but there is one MI in Cundall churchyard for a Henry HOLMES & his wife Ann, plus daughters Jane, Mary and Annie. Jane died in 1869 and was actually buried at Bishop Monkton, which might give a clue to the whereabouts of other family members. There is also a HOLMES household in nearby Baldersby from 1851 to 1871, headed by William; also another William occupying property in Topcliffe (adjacent parish) in 1838. Best wishes, Roz

    1. [N'Yorks] Re: Yafforth
    2. Hi Neil, Don't quote me, but I believe Yafforth now shares a vicar with Ainderby Steeple. Both are in the old North Riding of Yorkshire, and diocese of York, not in the diocese of Ripon (West Riding), which is why the Bishop's office transferred your query. I'm not sure what the situation is currently at Ainderby, but several of the local parishes are currently without a vicar at all, as people have retired or moved elsewhere in recent months, and there is an interregnum before a new minister is appointed. Hence your letter may have gone unanswered simply because there was no-one available to reply at the time. Many of the Ainderby memorials have disappeared over time. Some are in pieces, and comprise bits of paving in a "memorial garden" area (I hope this was made from stones which were already broken, not smashed for the purpose...!). This does not mean your people were not buried in the churchyard. You woiuld need to consult the burial registers; the parish registers before about 1970-80 for Ainderby and Yafforth are held at the North Yorkshire County Record Office in Northallerton; there are transcripts there for many of them. Best wishes, Roz
