She was born at Grange Farm, Houlsyke nr. Glaisdale. Her parents were Francis Wilson & Elizabeth Harland. Any connection? 3. Hello Rob and William, Helmsley's name and origin is fully explained on the pages of Genuki, however, the wonderful book, written in 1822 by Thomas Langdale, entitiled 'Topographical Dictionary of Yorkshire' from which the Genuki information comes, is available on a CD, from www.yorkshireancestors.com. If you look at this website, you will see that there is a sample entry from the book - which just happens to be.......... Helmsley. This census area covers Walmgate which at the time was quickly becoming the area where Irish immigrants settled in York. It maybe of interest to you to try and find a copy of Poverty and Prejudice by Frances Finnegan which studies the Irish immigrants in York from 1840 to 1875. On pages 162 / 3 the CRUMP family are mentioned! If you cannot find this book I will send a photocopy of the pages if you send me your postal address off the list.
