Hello Janice, Thanks for the reminder, I had forgotten about that site. I will need to think carefully about purchasing anything, as my budget is of necessity a small one. However, to own certain resources can be a real advantage when we are not on the spot. Brenda's B & B will be high on my list of places to stay if and when we are able to make the trip. Ailsa, You could try the Archive CD Book site of Rod Neep, he takes old books, many of them trade directories, and puts them onto CD. http://www.archivecdbooks.org/ Regards Jenny DeAngelis. Spain. Hi Ailsa, Ripon Historical Society has a series of indexes to the Baines 1822-3 Directory (covering all Yorkshire). These are available by wapentake in booklet form (5 for the North Riding, 8 for the West Riding) at either 2 or 3 GBP each, depending on size. The data is held on a searchable database, so an individualised name index is possible (price by negotiation, according to size); also CD format if preferred (not sure about price). For details contact <RHSinfo@aol.com> Best wishes, Roz
While trawling through the Genuki pages on Yorkshire, I was interested to see that several trade directories had been published over the years and I wondered if there was a source somewhere which would tell me what was available. It occurred to me that these publications and anything similar, could be a source of trying to trace the movements of some people between census years. I know of Bulmer's in 1890 and Kelly's in 1879 & 1905. Were there any others? I am particularly interested in the years 1861-1881 and the early 20th century. Is anyone able to tell me what might be available and how I would go about accessing the information, please? Any help is much appreciated. Regards Ailsa Petrie -- Hamilton New Zealand

Hi Ailsa, Brenda Green has a huge collection of directories, and other books of Yorkshire historical interest, in her yorkshireancestors.com library at Ebberston, midway between Pickering and Scarborough in North Yorkshire. Looking for the graves of Thomas and Mary Wilkinson nee Pybus, last known to have been in their 60's and living in Welbury in 1891 census. Thomas was born in Skelton and Mary was born in Liverton. I would be most grateful if someone could confirm this is their burial site and, even better, transcribe the stone if it is indeed in Welbury (St. Leonard's, I think) cemetery. --Tom Wilkinson

They have also been made available for purchase by Cleveland FHS at cost of GBP5.40 for purchasers in the UK - it's obviously a fairly substantial churchyard. Was horrified to read an item in Friday's "Darlington & Stockton Times" (p.13) entitled "Stones for the picking", inviting "anyone wo wants stones for rock gardens or walling" to collect them free of charge from Leyburn cemetery, as part of "tidying up" the cemetery. In the process, apparently, "many stones have been revealed and need to be removed". This is the project of three named women councillors, one of whom is quoted as saying: "Anyone who has a project which needs some stone should go down to the cemetery and help themselves". Surely these stones are not gravestones or memorials? What on earth is being done in the name of tidiness? Does anyone locally have any further information about this? Best wishes, Roz

I have evidence of the birth year of my GGfather. The year is further backed up the 1851, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census. In every census his age shows an increase of 10 years so he obviously knew his correct age, this is until he got married in 1886 where according to his marriage certificate he became three years younger. In my experience marriage ages you rather than makes you younger. Can anybody think of a reason why his age on the marriage certificate should be 39 rather than the correct age of 42, I guess this could be a mistake but it looks out of character as all census reports show what I believe to be his correct age. I have read the recent messages regarding the Teasdales of Kirbymoorside with interest. My family of Teasdale lived in the Masham, East Witton, and Middleham areas, but in the late eighteenth century William and Mary (nee Smith) Teasdale left Middleham with their children to live in Kirbymoorside. The family were all very involved in coal mining at the time (with some farming). Many of the more recent Teasdale's in the Kirbymoorside area are descended from this couple, but there are other Teasdales in the area who do not. I have pieced together my information from various census, IGI, and some PR's. I intend to try to discover more at Northallerton Record Office this summer. I would love to make contact with any other descendents of the family, as I grew up thinking I had a very rare surname. > Ragards > Angela John nee Teasdale
Hi Folks, Below please find the list of additions and updates to the Genuki Yorkshire site for the past 4 weeks. Tana Willis-Johnson has kindly donated her collected copies of church photographs, mainly for the Halifax area (and mainly taken by Chris Rothery). I list below her photographs which are not from the immediate Halifax area, and you will find on the Genuki Halifax parish page the list of the churches for Halifax town and the townships nearby - even these I have had to split on to separate pages as there are so many of them! There are quite a few of these yet to be dealt with. I have also added nearly a megabyte of data for Sheffield as you will see below. Martin A search on Google for "Charles Dickens Malton" brought up plenty of references. The following few paragraphs are taken from a longer article on the "This is York" website, and dated May 2002 - see http://www.thisisyork.co.uk/york/factfile/YORK_FACTFILE_HISTORYFEATURESOLD39 .html Keeping Dickens alive by Chris Titley CHARLES Dickens was in York on Friday. Cedric Charles Dickens that is, great grandson of the commanding Victorian writer. He was taking up a long-standing invitation by the Dickens Fellowship, York branch. ..... His visit, and the 100th anniversary this year of the founding of the first Dickens Fellowship, makes this a timely moment to recall the visits to North Yorkshire of the great novelist. Charles Dickens toured Britain to give readings from his books. But his connections with Yorkshire goes deeper than that. His brother, Alfred Lamert Dickens, was a railway engineer whose York employers had an office on Micklegate. He lived in Malton. So too did one of Charles Dickens' great friends, Charles Smithson. He was a lawyer whose Easthorpe Hall home lay outside the market town. While staying here, Dickens wrote several chapters of Martin Chuzzlewit. Perhaps his most famous Yorkshire connection lies in Nicholas Nickleby. Even as a young boy he had been fascinated by the tales of Yorkshire Schools - boarding institutions for unwanted boys. A court case in 1836 brought the matter to his attention again. It revealed the terrible conditions and brutal punishments suffered by the pupils. He decided to investigate. The following year he visited Bowes Academy at Greta Bridge, near Barnard Castle, run by William Shaw. What he saw inspired the infamous Dotheboys Hall in Nicholas Nickleby. Another site picked up by Google mentioned that Smithson ran the Malton Messenger (unfortunately it couldn't find the website, so I have no more info from that). It is not surprising that his brother should work in York as a railway engineer, as York was one of the major centres for railway development. (And railway engineer in this context will have the British meaning of someone who designs, builds or maintains the railways, not the driver of a train as in the USA !) Greta Bridge is on the northern border of Yorkshire and Barnard Castle is just the other side of the border, in County Durham. We exchanged e-mails recently about the SAWDON name, and the village of Brompton by Sawdon. You didn't mention the link to WINSPEAR - this is a name that occurs in Brompton by Northallerton, and I know 2 people with that name in their family tree.
