It doesn't look likely as my Ferguson's were in the West Riding (Barnsley/Bradford) unless you have a Riley or a Dicky(Richard?) Ferguson or a Leonard. The strange thing tho. is that I am a bit stuck around the 1870/80's and the name Dixon keeps cropping up in my research. Any connection? I cant trace Riley's parents or relatives. Hopefully there is a connection. Cheers, Johnn Ferguson

Hello, If anyone has access to electoral rolls for 1880 and postal directories, both for the Scruton area 1871-1878 or thereabouts, could you be so kind as to do a lookup for me, please? My gt grandfather, William KILVINGTON, is listed as living at Scruton Grange in the 1871 census. In Kelly's 1879 directory, he is a farmer of Scruton and there is another family living at The Grange. I would like to find out, if possible, exactly when he moved from Scruton Grange and where to. Secondly, if an electoral roll was published in 1880, was he listed on it. I have lost track of him until 1882, when the family arrived here in New Zealand. They are not on the 1881 census, so I'm trying to track down when they may have left England. Many thanks Ailsa Petrie -- Hamilton New Zealand

A Star Chamber court case in 1535 York had up a gang of folk for rioting and using bows, arrows and all manner of naughty things. (one of my ancestors!!!) The place it all happened in is called BRAKYNGBARGH. Can any of our noble group, think where this could be??? Theoretically it should be near Thirsk but all my maps and bending of village names draw a blank. Much obliged if anyone can suggest. William

Hello Rose Since Christiana Baker Breckon KING married in 1878 do you think he used that surname of KING. Seeking information on a Charles BAKER aged 11 born Redcar Yks listed as living with his grandparent Mark BAKER & Mary CLARK on the 1871 census. Charles was a witness to the 2nd marriage of Christiana BRECKON (nee Baker) to Thomas KING in Redcar Yks in 1878. Christiana Breckon was the daughter of Mark & Mary Baker. Have not been able to find him on any of the online census. Would appreciate help Regards Rose Morrison from Q. Aust.
Hello This is a long shot, but I'm hoping someone can help. Alex DONKIN of Derby married Flo from Whitby, possibly in the 1930s. I don't know Flo's surname. Does anyone have a connection with Alex DONKIN in their family tree? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards Christine Derby
I have a Francis Harrison, baptised on 24 November 1806 at St Mary's, Scarborough. He was the son of William Harrison and Mary Elliot, who married on 5 December 1801, also at St Mary's, Scarborough. I am still trying to establish whether that William Harrison was the William Robinson Harrison who was born on 1 May 1767, and baptised on 23 June 1767 at Scarborough. Soot has more than one meaning. One of them is from the Old English swot a variety of swete which means sweet (source the OED). As in "As the fayre and swoote rose spryngeth among the thorns" (1430) Sweethill sounds a nice place to live. Hi, I am at present going through the PR's of Kirkbymoorside and have found the Baptism of my Gt, Gt, Grandma HANNAH JACKSON. She was baptised on 14th June 1832 in Kirkbymoorside. The baptism entry states that her parent's are - Father - ROBERT JACKSON (son of WILLIAM & ELIZABETH JACKSON) and - Mother - ANN DOWSON (daughter of WILLIAM & ELIZABETH DOWSON). Robert was a Tailor. I know he died reasonably young and have found a burial for Robert aged 42yrs in 1833. Does anyone have either of these families in their family tree? Regards, Ruth
