    1. Re: [N'Yorks] Warthill area 1851? CARTWRIGHT
    2. Janice Wood
    3. Hello Andrew, The 1851 census index for the area has been produced by the City of York & District Family History Society. It is available on CD-Rom or microfiche. A booklet is also available, which lists the towns and villages in the area, giving the census piece number and folio (page) number. See http://www.yorkfamilyhistory.org.uk for further details. Using these 2 resources, I am able to tell you that Hannah CARTWRIGHT, aged 15, born at Warthill, was in Dunnington village on Sunday 30 Mar 1851. 1. [N'Yorks] Warthill area 1851? CARTWRIGHT
    2. Kerridge, Andrew
    3. All I am trying to help my father in law, and we spent a very fruitful weekend looking at the 1901 and 1881 censuses (as well as the 1891 Yorkshire DVD I have). For the next step, we want to try and find Hannah Cartwright in the 1851 census. She was bc 1835 in Warthill, but my father in law says that she was not with the rest of the family in 1851 Warthill. We know the census has been indexed for this area, and wondered if anyone could take a quick look for us, as it would appear that she was working away from home? Best regards Andy Kerridge

    1. [N'Yorks] Hartlepool & Middlesbrough Dicksons & Livingstones
    2. First, my thanks to all who helped me put together the list of "lists" for Hartlepool (Durham) and Middlesbrough (Yorkshire). It is my hope that I will find those who know of the DICKSON and LIVINGSTONE families in the early 1900s living in these areas. If you are a member of more than one of these lists, then you may receive multiple copies of my entries, for which I apologize. You are welcome to respond on the lists -- which, I hope, will spark further responses -- or to me personally off list. I will remain on most of these lists for a limited time since I know I will be swamped by mail from all of them, whether or not they have to do with my two interests, (I've been on the Yorkshire List before -- BG). My cousin, Ann Mary TELFORD, was born on 17 Jun 1868 in Wigton, and married Archibald Robert DICKSON 23 Dec 1899 in Hartlepool. They moved to the St. George District, Edinburgh, Scotland where Archie was employed in the gas works, and Archie Junior was born on 28 Dec 1905. Archie Senior died in an Edinburgh explosion about 1906, and Archie, Jr., was evidentially taken to Middlesbrough to be raised by and live with the Henry William LIVINGSTONE family. We do not know the circumstances or why the move. We do know that his mother, Ann Mary TELFORD, returned to St. Bees with Archie's older sister, Sarah, and lived with Ann Mary's brother. In Middlesbrough, Archie, Jr., was given the name William Henry LIVINGSTONE, reversing his adoptive father's name. We know that Archie (William) visited St. Bees in the 1930s where his mother and sister lived but returned to Middlesbrough, keeping his LIVINGSTONE name for the rest of his 72 years of life. Archie Jr. married Olive McCULLUM, served in the Army from 1939-1946 including BURMA, and helped to rebuild Plymouth, Devon working on the building sites as a steel fixer and bender. He also worked in later years as a storeman and served as a Union secretary. He could play classics on the piano by ear and is reputed to have been a very good soccer player. He and Olive had three children, Margaret, Michael and George, but the latter died at birth. The family of Margaret is actively pursuing her father's history, thus far none too successfully. The mystery is, what became of Archie's (William's) adoptive father, Henry William LIVINGSTONE, and mother and all the children raised as Archie's siblings, plus their offspring? Are any alive today who may inform us why Archie changed his name and did not stay with his mother? And what was the connection between the DICKSONS and the LIVINGSTONES? Why did the LIVINGSTONE family raise the DICKSON child? These are just a few of the questions surrounding the situation just described. We would be grateful for any contact that might enlighten us on the life of Archie DICKSON and his adoptive family, the LIVINGSTONES. Bob Telford, Long Beach, CA, USA

    3. I have an Ann HUGILL who married William Coverdale in 1827 in Kirbymoorside. (William Coverdale was my gggggrandfather). Ann was born in 1804 in Kirkdale and had 8 siblings although I haven't come across a Richard. Ann's parents were John Hugill and Elizabeth Lumley who married in Kirkdale in 1801. That's as far down that path as I've got. It would be interesting to know if there's a connection. 2. Colin Hinson
    3. Hi Folks, Please find below the list of Genuki Yorkshire additions and updates for the past 4 weeks or so. This list is posted to all the Yorkshire Rootsweb lists, so my apologies if you have multiple copies. My thanks to all who have contributed, and if I left anyone out of the list, please let me know. In view of the number of "Where is it" queries on some of the lists, I should like to point out that there is on the Genuki Yorkshire site a set of pages called "Where is it in Yorkshire". To the best of my knowledge, these contain the names with links to a description of all the Hamlets, Villages and towns in Yorkshire, and in some cases, single houses too. (If you know different, then please tell me about it). You will also find maps - wapentakes, parishes, and a detailed map of Yorkshire, designed with the Family Historian in mind (it shows which places were in which parish). You will find the "Where is it" pages at: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/Where/ please remember to read the all notes, as they may save you some searches in future. If you are looking for somewhere that isn't listed try using the full list of place names and doing a text search on the list - for intance if you are looking for Aughty Bridge and do a search for "y Bridge" you will find Oughty Bridge...........etc. If you are looking for nearby places, don't forget to use the "Nearby places" double headed arrow at the top of each parish page - this will give you grid references too. You will find the maps under the Maps heading on the main Genuki Yorkshire page. You will also find a heap of other information on that page too. There are currently a total of approx. 10,500 pages on the Genuki Yorkshire site - enough to keep you reading for a week or so<g>. 3. Hello, I am new to this list and have an intriguing situation. In the 1881 census I have my wife's g g uncle George KEMPT visiting an EDWARDS family in Kirkleatham. George was an Examiner at the Royal Gun Factory (Woolwich?) and he was accompanied by another Examiner. Knowing that industry was thriving in the Middlesbrough area at the time, I can easily envisage that Woolwich would have sent a couple of Examiners to verify Quality Control in a subcontractor. The question is which one. The head of the EDWARDS family is described as a Man Servant, so his master may have billetted these two visitors on him. My reaction is to ask who owned Kirkleatham Hall at that time, and did he also own a business that might have been supplying Woolwich? Regards Fred Edgar

    1. Re: [N'Yorks] Guisborough MIs
    2. margaret o'shea
    3. Thank you for checking the MIs for Guisborough. Skelton is only covered on the NBI from 1813. There is a Jane ROBINSON aged 79 (of Guisborough) buried at Skelton in 1819 who could be Thomas's wife. The Thomas ROBINSON (Yeoman of Skelton) I am looking for died between 12th May 1806 (date of his will), and 23rd February 1808 (when his wife, and the trustees renounced their rights under the will, and two sons were made executors). I will check with Teesside Archives regarding the burial for Thomas. I need this to find his age and calculate his birth year - to hopefully find the previous generation. As Thomas was described as "Yeoman of Skelton" when he married his wife Jane (Stewart) at Eston in 1764 perhaps he had already inherited from his father by that date. However, his will names two of his farms as Aysdale Gate and nearby Tidkinhow. He also had land at Moorsholme which he had intended to have sold. As his son Robert was farming at Moorsholme after his death this obviously didn't happen. Perhaps the identification of these properties may help me in the future with getting further back. From the internet I see that there is still a farm/small holding a Aysdale Gate.
