My great great grandfather used to take in waifs and strays off the street. He used to feed them and then send them on their way but one child was unofficially adopted by the family. On the 1901 census he is listed as a son but he was'nt their real son. How do I trace his parents or baptism when I don't know his real name? His name was Dennis and I know he took his adoptive families surname of Griffin. He was born 1893 supposedly in North Ormesby. Any advice appreciated. George --------------------------------- Yahoo! Hi Ann I can't remember exactly what year Poole Hospital closed its doors to patients but my grandmother died there on 24th December 1979 so it must have been in the eighties. I'm a staffnurse at Middlesbrough General Hospital so may be able to find out from someone there. Ann The records for Poole (note spelling) Hospital are held at Tyne and Wear Archives Service. It could have closed about 25 years ago, but was used as the Area Health Authority H.Q for many years. Also, it is not just an index, it is a full transcription . It's wonderful and excellent value for £25. Hello all, I have just been having another look at the CD, made in 1999, by David Sumner, who was then Chairman of the Hovingham Local History Group. It's title is 'Hovingham - the War Years' 1939 -1945. Copies are still available from David, priced at ten pounds. Email: david@radioryedale.co.uk It is presented in four main categories: Active Service - details and experiences of the 39 men and women who left the village and their loved ones, to join one or other of the services. Army Encampment - as Hovingham was used throughout the war by various army regiments. Evacuees - the names of those anxious children from Hull, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool, their homes, the schools from whence they came and their gurardians whilst they lived in Hovingham village. Village Life - some aspects that were and others that were not, affected. Stories are told in pictures, text and sound files; many local people recounting their own memories. Not just for people with interest in this village, as it is probably typical of many rural communities of the day. There is tragedy, sacrifice, humour, nostalgia..the recordings are great .Yes, and in their local accent too! Proceeds from sales of this CD help towards funding the not-for-profit Radio Ryedale project. PHILLIPS was at their residence in 1891 census. The only YOUNG I know of is Elizabeth YOUNG, who married William WILLCOCKS in 1825. Ann RICHARDSON married John Nelson Conn WILLCOCKS in 1833. Maria OSBORNE married Samuel WILLCOCKS in 1835. These three WILLCOCKS's were brothers, sons of Robert WILLCOCKS and Mary Ann CONN, both born in Devon (Devonport area) and married at St. Mary's Portsea in 1797. Harriet GUMB married Samuel WILLCOCKS (jr.) in 1854 and Elizabeth CHALKLEY married William Robert WILLCOCKS in Alverstoke in 1845. Meanwhile, Henry John WILLCOCKS and Julia SQUIRE got married in 1852 at All Saints, Portsea. (Thanks, Knightroots!) His brother, Samuel (jr.) was present. Thomas CONNELL married Charlotte CLEMENTS, while William MAY married her sister Mary Ann CLEMENTS, four days apart in March 1854. Edmund SQUIRE married one of six possible Sarah KEMPs in 1826 (Jan 8) at St. Mary's Portsea, but I don't yet know which one! And in 1880 Edmund Squire WILLCOCKS married Alice Ann MAY, whose older sister Mary J MAY married a seaman LOVELESS that I haven't yet traced. Arthur Squire WILLCOCKS married Edith Maud CARTER in Windsor, 1895, so she probably wasn't a Hampshire lass!
