    1. [N'Yorks] Re: Marriage in Ripon Cathedral
    2. Hi Mike, Ripon Cathedral is the parish church! Not unusual at all for anyone to marry there if they live within the parish. Prior to 1836 it was a collegiate church covering a very large parish. Over time new parishes were formed in the outlying areas, including Pateley Bridge, Sharow, Bishop Monkton, etc. where there had previously been only chapels of ease. The only other parish church in Ripon city is Holy Trinity, consecrated in 1827. Hope this helps. Best wishes, Roz

    1. [N'Yorks] Marriage in Ripon Cathedral
    2. Mike
    3. Would it be normal for the average working man to be married in the Cathedral in approx the 1920`s. I have a friend whose Grandparents were married there she believes. She is wondering whether it was usual to marry in the Cathedral rather than a parish church?

    1. [N'Yorks] Help - Snowball Family
    2. Chris
    3. Hi Listers I'm new to the list and looking for help in tracing the parents of my GGG Grandfather Christopher Snowball. This at the moment is my brick wall. Christopher married Sarah Hammond in Middlesmoor Feb 4th 1822 on the Marriage certificate it gave Christopher as coming from the Parish of Masham, but i'm not sure whether he was actually born there, he was born about 1803 as his age was given as 38 at the time of his death on Jan 17th in 1841. Their first child John was born in Masham Jan 12th 1823 a short time after this the family moved down here to Cheshire. Is there anyone researching this family. Would be very grateful for any help. 1. [N'Yorks] Just good Friends
    2. I agree with Geoffrey, I am lucky and my daughter's in-laws are good friends of ours. It works well that way as you both have the couples interest at heart. Thankfully my daughter's in-laws love her like a daughter. I refer to them as my daughters Mother in law or Father in law. Or use their names to people that know me well. They are both from the North East and are living in the south. That is what makes them so easy to get along with. It would be interesting to know if there is a relationship that describes them. sincerely, Jacqui White

    1. [N'Yorks] Relationship to daughter's in-laws
    2. Thwaite
    3. Listers This will test the ingenuity/knowledge/inventiveness of all - Does anyone know if there is an English word/expression for the relationship one has with the parents-in-law of one's own son/daughter ??? EVEN thoughts from other languages/cultures/societies would be interesting to know (- as apparently there is a distinct word in Chinese for this relationship!) I doubt that English stretches this far, but my wife and I are about to acquire some of them as an addition to our family (courtesy of my daughter) and this has set me to wondering...! NO need to remind me of the Prohibited Degrees of relationship !! Regards Stephen in the Waikato New Zealand

    1. [N'Yorks] GARGET(T) in Stapleton
    2. Ian Sage
    3. Good morning all, I am new to the list and to Yorkshire research, and have signed up to see if anyone has interest in or connection to the GARGETT family (also sometimes GARGET or GARGATE). I have traced my line back from Co. Durham to the birth in Stapleton around 1813 of John GARGET. I understand from a correspondent that there were GARGETs in Stapleton up to 1840 at least. I am aware that there is a heavy concentration of GARGETTs in Teesdale, but do not have any connection there - yet. Does any lister have a connection here? And does anyone have local records for Stapleton which are relevant? Finally (sinking feeling) where is the record office which will cover Stapleton? Many thanks and best wishes to all, Ian Sage (Worcestershire)
