    2. At some point in your later research please keep an eye out for THOMAS and JANE FISHER who came from Sand Hutton. They were alive in the 1682 to 1702 period. Jane married firstly John Cattell before 1680 and then in 1681 as a widow (of a few weeks) married George Cattell of Sheriff Hutton. Thomas Fisher, her brother is refered to in a Will as coming from Sand Hutton. At least you have a FISHER family nearby in little earlier times William

    1. [N'Yorks] DUESBERY of Scarborough
    2. A. Mark Robinson
    3. I am interested in tracing all records relating to the DUESBERY family of Scarborough (from which I descend). The name has several spelling variants, such as DUESBURY, DEWSBURY, DEWSBERRY, etc, but these would seem to have been used fairly interchangeably, and to have referred to the same family. I have been through the parish records for Scarborough, and have pieced together some of the family tree. One branch intermarried with the Thornton family, resulting in the Thornton-Duesbery line, which appears in Crisp's "Visitation of England and Wales", 1919, and Walker's "Yorkshire Pedigrees", 1943. The other branches, however (including mine), are more difficult to trace. It appears, though, that the family was sufficiently prominent in Scarborough to have left its name attached to different streets and passageways. For example, in Pigot's "National Commercial Directory", 1834, there is a Scarborough joiner, Robert Percy, living at 4 Dewsbery Place, a retailer of beer, John Bradley, and a turner, Matthew Hill, also in Dewsbery Place, a ship owner, Christopher Hill, in Dewsbury Row, and a school, Amicable Society's Schools, in Dewsbery Walk. In White's "History, etc, of East and North Yorkshire", 1840, the Amicable Society still has its school in Duesbery (sic) Walk, although Robert Percy is by then at 4 North Terrace (is this a change of address, or has his old address instead been renamed?) I would be interested in any information about any member of this family. Also, any information about the origin of the names of these different parts of Scarborough would be very much welcomed. And, lastly, does anyone know: is there anywhere in today's Scarborough where the Duesbery name survives? A. Mark Robinson London

    1. [N'Yorks] ROBINSON of Scarborough
    2. A. Mark Robinson
    3. I descend from a long line of Scarborough men who passed on the name of William ROBINSON from one generation to the next, right through the seventeenth century and eighteenth centuries (the last one was born in 1791, although by then the family had made its way to London). I have recently discovered in William White's "History, Gazetteer, and Directory of the East and North Ridings of Yorkshire", published in 1840, the following passage in a description of the principal buildings of the town: "Robinson's Almshouse is a small tenement, in Long Westgate, given by Wm Robinson, and lately rebuilt by subscription". William Robinson is a fairly common name, of course. Indeed, my earlier researches through Scarborough parish records suggest that there were at least three or four separate, and fairly prolific, Robinson families living in the town during the period my ancestors were there. These ancestors of mine, however, consisted of ship's masters and ship owners and, from the wills I have traced to date, were people who owned landed property in Scarborough. In other words, they could have had the means to endow an almshouse. I need someone with an intimate knowledge of Scarborough, or someone with access to old records or to contemporary Scarborough or Yorkshire gazetteers (probably circa 1750), to try to identify the William Robinson who founded the almshouse in Long Westgate. Can anyone help? A. Mark Robinson London

    2. Ailsa Petrie
    3. Hello List, Richard STEEL, farmer of Knayton Grange married Eliza Harriet HAMILTON at St Mary's Leake in December 1918. Eliza had been born at Knayton Grange, a daughter of Richard and Emma HAMILTON. Her brother Francis Richard HAMILTON, also a farmer of Knayton, had died the month before and I am wondering if Richard STEEL took over the farm at that time. In the churchyard at Leake St Mary a headstone indicates that Richard, husband of Eliza STEEL of Knayton died in June 1947. Has anyone come across mention of Eliza Steel and/or any children? I would like to know when she died and where she may be buried. Many thanks Ailsa Petrie -- Hamilton New Zealand

    2. Michael Harrison
    3. Hello everyone: I would be interested in hearing people's advice on the use of Taxation and Tithe Records for family research. I am paticularly interested in the Egton/Glaisdale area of North Yorkshire and looking for members of the Harrison family. My great -great-great grandfather William Harrison and his wife Mary Hutchinson left for Canada from Whitby in 1831. I need to access some records between about 1790-1831 to figure out who was who (there were many Harrisons in the area). Tithe maps for the area are from around 1841. I would also be interested in hearing from people about the use of land records. Thank you, Michael Toronto, CANADA
