Hi Dewi I live quite near to Carlton (previously juxta Snaith). If you would like to contact me off list with exactly what you require I will do my best to help Regards Mavis
Hi, I've been trying to find out more about Carlton juxta Snaith; photos, maps, basically anything of interest. Till now I've had no joy. Can anyone tell me where I can get hold of some background info without involving great expense, or better still a link to a web site? I've searched google and yahoo already. Thanks -- Dewi Evans ______________________________________________________________________________ Doppelsieg fur WEB.DE FreeMail und Club bei Stiftung Warentest! Hi to All, Back on the list after a break. Does anyone have a current email address for SHANE LAMBERT who I 'met' on this list a couple of years ago. I believe Shane lived in Leeds and was a student of Medieval History. I know he changed jobs at the end of last year and I haven't heard from him since. Shane was very helpful and even went as far as visiting St. Oswalds Cemetery where some of my ancestors are buried and took photo's of family graves for me. I would love to know how things are with him these days. If anyone knows how I can contact him I would be most grateful. Greetings, This morning I was checking through the GRO Index for the years 1950-1976 and noted some registration districts I had not heard of before. Can someone tell me what areas the registration districts of SPEN VALLEY, BUCKROSE and CLARO include, please? From the volume number given, they are in the North Yorkshire area. By chance, I came across deaths recorded which are of interest to me. Many thanks Ailsa Petrie -- Hamilton New Zealand

Buckrose (a wapentake in East Riding of YKS) closed in 1974 and records are now at either Ryedale, Scarborough or Bridlington. Claro (a wapentake in the West Riding of YKS) closed in 1998 and records are at North Yorkshire (Harrogate). If you follow the links on the above page you will be able to find out more about the areas covered. Here is a map with Claro & Buckrose wapentakes : <http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/Maps/Wapentakes1.gif> Regards, -- Helen Oram
Hi I thought I would just re-post my interest in the surnames HIRST & RUSSELL in the Northallerton area. I have the RUSSELLs beginning in about 1670ish in Hawnby, then they appear to move into the Ingleby Arncliffe & Osmotherly areas and later on into Northallerton. Nathaniel Russell owned Russells Grocer's shop and Café in the High Street Northallerton. Besides Nathaniel the grocer the Russells had amongst them, Flax Dressers, Linen Manufacturers, Plumbers & Braziers HIRSTs I have beginning in West Yorkshire until about 1770 when a Godfrey Hirst married a girl from Pontefract, my 4 x Gt. Grandparents, and they moved to Northallerton to run the Golden Lion Inn in the High Street there for about 30 years. Godfrey died in 1807 and one of his sons Francis took over the running of the inn until his own death in the 1830s. Another two sons of Godfrey, called Richard & Jonathan, both seem to have gone to Kingston on Hull and the Sculcoates area, East Riding, where they had an Ironmongery business. Richard was back in Northallerton by 1833 when he died at Bank Close there, but Jonathan died in Hull in 1862. I am descended from one of Godfrey's other sons, named Edwin who himself had a son called Godfrey. This later Godfrey married an Ann Russell in 1841, they were my 2 x Gt. grandparents. They had several children in Romanby and Northallerton. Godfrey died in 1878 in Northallerton I believe, but I am not sure & need to check this. I have just discovered that Annie Hirst, widow of the latter Godfrey, died in the Heaton area of Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1887 and that several of her children had gone to live in this part of Northumberland whilst one or two others lived around Gateshead County Durham. One of Ann and Godfrey's sons was also named Godfrey and he was a Jet manufacturer at Whitby in 1881-1891, apparently he was famous for Jet Mosaics, or so I have been told. He also died in the Heaton area of Newcastle in 1901, it was this death that led me to Newcastle with this family and the finding of Annie's death. Has anyone else come across Hirst ancestors who moved to the Newcastle or Gateshead areas and who might be related to mine back in Northallerton? Or the Russell family who seem to have stayed put as far as I can tell. Regards Jenny DeAngelis. Spain.

Hi to the list, I have just discovered the maiden name of my 3xgrandmother. Catharine BOAGEY. Catharine BOAGEY, born about 1831 at Redcar married John LEE (b feb 01, 1829 Upleatham) they had 3 children: Hannah, b 1851 Christian, b 1855 Mary Ann, b1857 John Lee died sometime before the 1861 census, as Catharine is listed as a fishermans widow. On the 1881 census Catharine shows up still as a widow, but with an additional 3 chrildren: Catharine, b 1862 Ann b, 1866 Elizabeth, b 1868 Who was the father of these extra children? Would there be any way of finding out? Any information on my BOAGEY greatly appreciated. Thanks very much Anola Australia.
Hi, Just learned that my gg-grandfather was born in Whitwell, Yorkshire, England. If this is not in North Yorkshire, please let me know and I will post to correct Yorkshire list. I understand from Genuki that when he was born in 1826, Whitwell was part of, or known as part of, Crambe. He went to Canada in 1856. He ended up in Ontario, Canada by 1862. Would anyone know where his departure port would likely be if he lived in Whitwell/Crambe. Thanks, Renee (Holmes) O'Neal
