    1. 1841 CENSUS WEST BURTON
    2. Julie Robinson
    3. Hello List, Could anyone help me, please, in finding 1841 Census information for a JOHN HAMMELL, labourer (for probably all of his life, certainly 1851-1871). John himself was born in Greenhow Hill <1805-8> or, as it variously appears Greenahill/Green Hill/Gunhohill. In 1841, however, he and his wife (name as yet unknown) were probably living in WEST BURTON where at least one of his children would appear - JOHN aged <7> years and, just possibly, THOMAS < ? months>. There could well be others, and I suggest JOSEPH/ROBERT as possibilities. I should be most grateful for any help here. I'm in Lincolnshire and can only offer Victorian B/M/Ds 1837-1980. Yours, Julie

    3. Hi Sue, There is a Green Lane in Harrogate, now at the top of the Rossett Area of the Town. the Stray is 250Acres of green Grassland in the Centre of Harrogate protected by Royal Charter. As green lane is very close to where the Ministry of Defence was situated (St. georges Road) in harrogate whcih was originally part of the Air Ministry, it is highly possible that there was an Airfield near there. Also ther was an ATC corp based there so again. a possibility. I suspect that there will be plenty of people on list who can accurately confirm this. I worked there from 1980 to 1991 and remember hearing regales from colleagues about an Airfield near the site. 2. Sue, Thanks for the offer to check the Sowerby NBI, I know there was a Susanna Sayer who died there in the mid 1800s, and some other Sayers. I was very kindly sent a list of some NBI entries for Yorkshire recently but havnt had the opportunity to look at it so dont know if the data includes Sowerby. Also, am I right in understanding that the NBI index only lists the names and doesnt give any details (like `wife of..., etc). If so, how would I get full details? 1. Re: [NYorks] MOON family of Fewston
    2. Thanks Michele I have received an answer from a person that informed me how many miles away Fewston is from Danby. Well, with 67 miles I really don't believe that Fewston is the correct place for my MOON family. I do know that Jane MOON married John COLLIER at Danby/ Glasidale area in May 1770 so I really believe that my MOON family is probably from somewhere around Danby (near Whitby) Perhaps your husbands MOON family of the North York Moors would be more correct area for me... 1. HAMMELL - NIDDERDALE/COVERDALE
    2. Julie Robinson
    3. Hello List, My relative appears in the 1851 Census as having been born in "GREEN HILL, YORKS." In 1861 this place name appears as "GUNHOHILL, NEW YORKSHIRE". He was born around 1805. I have scoured quite detailed local maps/Ordnance Survey maps but cannot spot a "Greenhill" or "Green Hill" anywhere likely, also the YorksGen Place Names. If it helps those of you who know the area, John HAMMELL's second wife, Dorothy CROFT was born in CARPBERBY. Also, WEST BURTON features strongly as the place of birth for their children during the 1830s to 1850s. (One of the sons appears in 1871 living in STONEBECKUP). At the same time, father, older John, is living in BURTON-cum-WALDEN parish, WEST BURTON and states he was born in "GREENAHILL". Could somebody help, please, with locating this "Greenhill/Greenahill? My second question is where to go for Marriage and Death records. I am fairly certain that the family was Nonconformist. Yours, Julie

    1. Northallerton Look Up Please - RHODA HARTLEY
    2. Hi, If anyone is planning a visit to Northallerton would you be so kind and check out the Burials for Rhoda HARTLEY. She died in Leeds Infirmary on 30 September 1840 but the death was not registered until 24 November 1840 by H L THORNTON (in attendance). Her husband Elias HARTLEY was born in Knaresborough in 1803 but he has disappeared after his youngest son William was baptised in 1836. I had assumed that Rhoda was buried in Leeds but have been told there is no Rhoda or Elias in Leeds Burial Index. The children are with Elias' mother in Knaresborough for the 1841 Census so I am wondering if Rhoda's body was taken back to Knaresborough and buried there. The whole thing is an absolute mystery. Any help would be very much appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Ruth
