Hi Ailsa, Royal Oak is a village north west of Darlington, Co. Durham out towards Barnard Castle This area is alwlays confused between Yorkshire and Durham as the River Tees is the boundary and people around there do not bother with county names. I was born in Darlington and our garden went down to the River Tees and Yorkshire was on the other bank! I have not seen Royal Oak on a map but it does exist as a hamlet. Do you have any other information as I am visiting the area in May. Do any of you historians know of any connection between the N York village of Wintringham and the N Lincs village of Winteringham? equally I find lots of historic data on the village of Settrington (N Yorks) and the villages of Blackness and Faxfleet in N Lincs. Is there any connection historically? I ask because my family appear to have duel connections??!! Rob
Hi Roz, From the Kirkdale MI's published by the Cleveland Family History Society at:- http://www.clevelandfhs.org.uk/ Erected in the memory of Thomas Ellerby late of Salton who d 10 Sept 1825 aged 74 years. Also Ralph Ellerby of Salton who departed this life 27 Sep 1830 aged 75 yrs. This does not look like your names, but they look like there may be a connection. Also:- In memory of Christopher Ellerby of Whitwell in this county who departed this life 16 July 1847 aged 48 years. Also of Elizabeth his wife who died 20 Jan 1860 aged 63 years. I looked in the Salton MI's published by the East Riding of Yorkshire FHS at:- http://www.eyfhs.org.uk/ Unfortunately did not find any possibles. Hi list I am currently researching the above names, many in Egton in the 1700's and then around Hinderwell and Skelton in the 1800's. I will be pleased to hear from anyone with similar interests. Roger D Gill West Yorks
Ailsa, Using Oldmaps (www.old-maps.co.uk), its ability to call up a modern map, and the Ordnance Survey Atlas of Great Britain: Royal Oak, Co Durham: on the B6275 (Dere Stree), north of Piercebrige, where the A68 crosses. Royal Oak, Yorkshire: a level crossing where the railway from Bridlington to Filey crosses the A165. The former seems more likely. Hope this helps. Jim Balmer Website: freespace.virgin.net/jim.balmer
I am sure there is a Royal Oak near to Darlington in County Durham I can remember passing it some years back. hope this helps Stephen Northumberland. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ailsa Petrie" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 18, 2006 9:07 PM Subject: [NYorks] Royaloak, Yorkshire or Durham > Good morning, > > On two different census entries I have the birth of a person given as > "Royaloak". Hi Ailsa, Try searching on "www.streetmap.co.uk" using the search terms "Royal Oak" (two words and minus the quotes) as a GB place. There are several including one in North Yorkshire (near Scarborough) and one in County Durham. Also note that "Royal Oak" is a popular name for a pub or inn. So it could be a "house" name. regards, Peter Appleton My Family Tree website: http:/www.tribalpages.com/tribes/pappleton3 -----Original Message----- From: Ailsa Petrie [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 18 January 2006 21:07 To: [email protected] Subject: [NYorks] Royaloak, Yorkshire or Durham Good morning, On two different census entries I have the birth of a person given as "Royaloak". Hi everyone, I have a side-shoot individual who appears in 1851 census as an 18 year old single male and then is heard of no more until 1881 census when he re-appears married and with family. I'm trying to identify possible avenues for research to fill in the big gap in his life. My starting point is to understand possible reasons for his absence from two consecutive censuses. Is there a list member who can give me answers to any of the following questions? (N.B. The time period in question is from 1850-1880) If an individual was serving abroad in the army, would he appear in the UK census? If an individual was in the Royal Navy and was aboard ship, would he appear in the UK census? If an individual was a merchant seaman aboard ship, would he appear in the UK census? In the case of the two naval questions: Would it make any difference if his ship was in a UK port, in transit at sea or in an overseas port? Apart from army/navy service, is there any other reason that fellow listers can think of as to why an individual would be missing from two consecutive censuses? Do the Ancestry.co.uk census indexes include all land-based institutions (e.g. prisons, army barracks, naval shore establishments, etc.)? regards, Peter Appleton Researching the following surnames: Yorkshire (North Riding): APPLETON, BOWERS, COCKERILL, EVANS, FAWCETT, LEGG/LEGGE, MASON Norfolk: BOWERS, BRUNDLE, CALVER/CARVER, MULLENGER/MULLINGER, WOODS Cornwall: ANNEAR Lincolnshire: HOWSAM Suffolk: MATTHEWS Westmorland: MASON My Family Tree website: http:/www.tribalpages.com/tribes/pappleton3
Hi Janice, Tnak you for the offer. Any help would be gratefully received. I am trying to locate a baptism and marriage in Nunnington for an Ann(e) KAY, born sometime between about 1755 & 1770. She married Ralph Ellerby of Kirkdale in 1794. I am trying to establish whether this couple had any children in Kirkdale other than Thomas (1797) and Christopher (1799), whether Ann died shortly thereafter, and whether it was the same Ralph who subsequently married a Hannah Blenkhorne in 1802. Any ELLERBY references for Kirkdale, Nunnington or Salton would be of interest. Many thanks. Best wishes, Roz
Hi Ailsa: I am wondering if Royaloak is the name of a house. I have a very detailed road atlas and do not see it listed as a place. I had the same problem some years ago trying to find a village called Bainwood--it turned out to be the name of the house. Hi Mary, My husband's gg.grandmother is Mary Ann HOLMES, who lived at Bilsdale/Hawnby/Snilesworth. Not miners, but I am not sure if this family is connected to those HOLMES who were in Bilsdale 50 years earlier, - Mary Ann's father was born in Nesfield, in the parish of Ilkley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He was a gamekeeper, back in Ilkley and in Snilesworth, so it is most likely to have been work that took him there, but he may have gone there because of family. If you find any connection, I would be interested. Hi Mary, Many thanks for the information, the documents you mention sound like something I should look into further. For information to others on the list I purchased my copy of the Bilsdale surveys from Northallerton records office a few years ago now. It might be worth enquiring with them if they have any copies left.
