Thanks Jim, I'll try and track down the OS maps you mention. Cheers Sue
Hi Sue, I really haven't a clue. Turnpikes seem to have caught on in the north only around 1790. The large-scale Ordnance Survey maps would certainly have shown the tollgates, and these were probably on the smaller scale OS maps so long as they existed. Sorry I can't help more. Jim
Hi Listers This is a shot in the dark as I am searching for any descendants of two brothers and a cousin from Stoke Ferry in Norfolk, who migrated north to County Durham during the period from about 1870 to 1875. The two brothers were David William and George SPINKS, their cousin being John SPINKS. All three left Norfolk, where they Ag. Labs., to become miners in the North. The following are extracts from the 1901 Cenus: RG13/4673 Folio 21 Page 39 (South Moor, Stanley, County Durham) Surname First Name Status Age Occupation Birth Place SPINKS George Head 36 Coal Miner Norfolk, Stoke Ferry SPINKS Elizabeth Wife 40 Durham, Heugh Hall SPINKS David Wm. Hi Jim, Do you know when maps started to show the various turnpike roads and tollgates / tollbars in the Durham and North Yorkshire area? Cheers Sue
Hi John, Interesting question! Somebody is sure to come up with earlier examples, but for Northumberland we have John Ogilby's strip map of the road from Tynemouth to Carlisle 1765, Robert Morden's playing card map, showing only the Great North Road and the Tynemouth to Haltwhistle 1676 (he did all counties of England & Wales) and John Warburton's map of 1716, possibly the earliest to show all the main roads. The first Ordnance Survey maps of Northumberland (25 inches to the mile, 1218 sheets!) were published 1859-66. Maps with roads occur regularly in directories from the early 1800s. Whether they were affordable for our ancestors to peruse is another matter! Jim Balmer Website: freespace.virgin.net/jim.balmer

Hi, > Can anyone tell me why we cannot to get on aol any e-mails over the > last few > days I had one yesterday without any problems. Jim Balmer
Hi I am new to the North York's list but have been researching my Temple ancestors for the last 3 years. Recently I have been interested in the 12 children of John and Elizabeth Temple between 1812 and 1833. I have traced 11 of the 12 but can find nothing at all on Thomas Temple apart from his birth in Whorlton in 1819. I have checked all census information from 1841 onwards and have searched local Parish Records for any marriage or death without success. I can only assume therefore that he has emigrated. A trawl through Ancestry records in the US did not produce any likely fit and therefore any other ideas as to where to look would be appreciated. Also, if anyone has done any research on the MASON name in the Middlesbrough area then any link between MASON and TEMPLE around 1800 would be most helpful. Hi All: I am wondering if anyone would have a photo of Keysbeck House--was located not too far north of Stape. I undestand it was taken down 30+ years ago. My great great grandfather was born there. Thanks for any help you can give me. Regards, Joan
Terry, Thank you for your suggestions. I wrote to the e-mail address I had found on the web and have had a reply from Darlington, almost by return mail, with the information I was seeking. That's impressive service. I still need to investigate Ripon and Middlesbrough, but this is a good start.
