Hi, I am having a problem trying to find one of my ancesters &wonder if anybody has had the same problem but have eventually decided he is are the one they are looking for. I have spent several months looking for a William Holmes His death was registered in 20 Nov 1837 in(Kirkbymoorside)age 58 Disease of the Lungs He was a Collier by his son John He was buried in Bransdale age 58 He married Ann Hornby 20 Feb 1808 Helmsley She was still living when he died In the 1851 census she was 70yrs This information would make him born 1779. My problem is the only William who seems to fit is one bapt in 1764 Has anybody found anybody who fits their tree whose age been given with such a large gap. His son might have just guessed his age but his father would have been in his forties when he married & I havn`t found an earlier wedding. All the family were colliers in isolated areas near Helmsley. Mary Lamport --------------------------------- To help you stay safe and secure online, we've developed the all new Yahoo! hello listers Am new to this list and trying to find more info on the following Earnshaws: 1901 census William born 1868 in Darlington Wife Emily born Hornton Oxfordshire various children including Eveline (according to 1901 census, although actually Evelyn), Mildred - Sparkhill 1893, William - Sparkhill 1899, Ida - Sparkhill 1901 They also had his mother Martha living with them - born 1826 Plymouth 1881 census William was living with his family in Darlington: Father Richard - born 1834 in Craike (Crayke) Yorkshire Mother Martha - born 1826 in Plymouth Devon Sister Ann - born 1870 in Cockerton Durham Can find no record of marriage of William and Martha, or even Williams birth, although I have found plenty of Earnshaws born during the relevant dates in Easingwold (just up the road from Crayke) Would be very grateful if anyone can help me with this problem, perhaps with other census returns? Robin Townsend. PS. My elderly aunt maintains that an ancestor was mayor of York, is she living in a dream world or does this have a basis in fact?

I have found a marriage in 1924 of Joseph M YOUNG and Eva A ALMOND and a possible child born in 1927 - Basil YOUNG. I believe that Joseph YOUNG is a part of my CLARK family. The 1901 census index shows Eva ALMOND as a 6 year old, living with her parents John and Dorothy and siblings Dorothy 8,Elizabeth 15, Emily 21, John 16 and William 14. All born in Northallerton. I would like to learn more, especially about Eva and Joseph YOUNG, their son Basil and any other children they may have had. Can anyone help, please? Hello I wonder if anyone can help me solve a puzzle about a James Sayer of Whitby. James was born in about 1815 in Whitby, the son of James Sayer and Charlotte (nee Williamson) By 1841 James would appear to have been married and living in Haggersgate, Whitby, and according to the census, working as a house carpenter. The 1851 census lists a James born at East Row, Whitby, living with wife Isabella and a niece, Isabella Cook ( Isabella, aged 15, has not been identified as yet). James was apparently working as a jet factor in Ruswarp, Whitby, quite a different occupation from Carpenter. Then the 1855 Slaters director has a James Sayer listed as a ship owner living at Wellington Place. In 1861 census a James and Isabella and their niece Isabella Cook are listed at Wellington Terrace, Whitby. (is this the same as Wellington Place or a different address?) Again is this the same James- his place of birth is now given as Newholme cum Dunsley, not Whitby. (There is a Newholm, Whitby but the census clearly states Newholme cum Dunsley). James does not appear on the 1871 census so perhaps he died - there is a death of a James Sayers in qtr ending June 1862 in Whitby. So, why the variety of occupations - do we have one James here or two? The birth date of 1815/16 seems consistent but the birth place varies and so do the occupations. of course, it is possible that he started work as a carpenter, made the boat which he leased out, and worked himself as a worker of jet until his death in the early 1860s. I've checked Ancestry.co.uk for any obvious answers, but nothing. Would any lister have the answer? I dont have his marriage record and have not had sight of any original birth or death records. Are there some local records that might help? Fingers crossed Laurel Sayer Surrey (researching all instances of Sayer and varients in Yorkshire and Durham)
Hello all, Don't forget! This evening ..... The County Record Office for North Yorkshire, together with BBC Radio York are holding a 'Family History Surgery' on Wednesday evening, 15th February 2006, between 5pm and 8.30pm. Several experts will be on hand to answer your family history questions. BBC Radio York will be recording family history stories. Please come along and see what it's about. (But please book if you need to talk to one of the experts). Nobody will be under any pressure to talk to the BBC, but if you do have an interesting story and would like to share it with the world, here is your opportunity. I don't think there will be any live broadcasting here, but they do hope to record a few stories. The County Record Office is in Malpas Road, Northallerton, close to County Hall and the railway station, and only a few minutes walk from the centre of the town. Hi Gordon, You WERE posh then, I had to settle for an old annual from the local jumble sale, for the cost of a threepenny bit, sometimes a penny, that annual was thick enough to sit on the one skate (never had two by the way) and steered it by moving the book, okay until you fell off going around corners, Another money saving trick was going to the pictures. After I had completed my paper round I was able to dash uptown and by standing outside the various cinemas, for about the 5.30pm showing, I would ask couples if they 'would take me in please'. If the film was a U, it was okay, I needed an adult if it was A. If I was lucky enough someone would not take me in, but also pay the 1/-d admission price. Even better, sometimes they 'elevated' me to 'upstairs and brought me an ice cream from the usherette at half time. Never thought it was wrong to speak to strangers. Now to see just ONE film costs over a fiver, and no fish and chips afterwards. regards John still looking for ANY of the undermentioned names ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gordon Neal" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 12, 2006 8:43 PM Subject: [YKS] Yorks. in 40's and 50's > Hi,All, > Reading all these emails of memories of the 40's and 50's leaves me wondering whether to laugh or cry. > My grandchildren keep pestering me to tell them what life was like as a child. Now ,I don't have to worry. Hi, > Sometimes too Jack is a pet name for John. We have to be a bit careful though. The births indexes show that plenty of children were actually named Jack, Betsy, Tom, Sally, Fred and so on. One recurring problem with transcripts is that names on census pages frequently give an abbreviated name followed by a colon, as in Eliza: On most occasions, this will have been transcribed as Eliza and not Elizabeth. One can never win! Jim Balmer Website: freespace.virgin.net/jim.balmer

By the way Laura, what year are you looking for in the census? Sometimes too Jack is a pet name for John. In 1901 there is a family, with a William and Margaret, childrens names, Sarah, William, John, Leslie, and Ann in East Witton, Leyburn. In 1891 childrens names, Ralph S, Sarah J, Mary E, Ann, William R and John. In 1881 there is a Margaret Hardy and children Ralph and Sarah Jane as visitors in a family called Stott in East Witton Without. If this is the family you are looking for I can give you further details. Thanks for the link to such a fantastic website Jo, and also thanks to Jim, i had no idea molly was a mary. An interesting note at the bottom of the page mentioned marjory, which is a family name down that line, so perhaps that is also a possibility as well as Mary. Thanks! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Balmer" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 13, 2006 3:10 PM Subject: Re: [NYorks] Help with shortened names > Hi Laura, > >> Molly > > Normally Mary > >> Sally > > Probably Sarah. > > > > Jim Balmer > > Website: freespace.virgin.net/jim.balmer > > > > > ==== ENG-NORTH-YORKS Mailing List ==== > Check out other genealogy resources on the net at John Fuller's most > helpful site > http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html > > ============================== > New! Hi Laura, > Molly Normally Mary > Sally Probably Sarah. Jim Balmer Website: freespace.virgin.net/jim.balmer
This Web site is really good looking for Pet names. It was started for Scottish names. http://www.whatsinaname.net/ They have Molly as a pet name for Mary and Sally as a pet name for Sarah. In my family we have a Sarah but she gets called Sally.
