Hi again, Further to my last message, I forgot to give you another website, which shows a portrait of Lord Wharton by Van Dyke and tells you about the man himself. http://gmb.orpheusweb.co.uk/lowrow/tglw.html Cheers, Don.
Hi everyone, Thanks to all who responded to my query about Philip, Lord Wharton, his Bibles & Prayer Books. I have discovered an article today on the following website:- http://gmb.orpheusweb.co.uk/lowrow/bible.html This is most interesting and tells you quite a lot about him, which I certainly didn't know before. I have only ever seen one of these Bibles before and it was in the small museum on Portland (Weymouth), some years ago.The lady in charge wasn't able to enlighten me on Lord Wharton, and said that the Bible had been presented to the museum at some time in the past. The following website, which Peter Appleton recommended, certainly makes most interesting reading, but doesn't seem to mention the actual Philip himself. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bandl.danby/Index.html Regards to everyone. Cheers, Don.

Hi Mike, You don't give the actual context in which the term is used, but I suspect the meaning is as follows: on hand, upon hand. In ones possession; in ones charge or keeping: said of things, or of work or business which one has to do. to have on hand: to have with one; to be charged with, have the care or responsibility of; to have in order to deal with or dispose of; to be about or engaged on. Hi Everyone, I'm trying to find my grandmother CAROLINE LINKEN. Her father EDWARD LINKEN is on the 1901 census together with other members of that name. They are living in St Pancras London, father away in 1901 in Carmarthenshire as a visitor. (Which is the best site for contacting people in St Pancras.) Caroline was about 15 in 1901 and may have been 'in service'. But I've tried Lincoln, Linken, Lincon, Lincen and even Luiska which appears to be her name on her marriage certificate to William Harrison on August 7 1922 in Nottingham. Would any kind soul out there take pity on me and help me find my mum's mum, she said she had one, so it must be true. many thanks John Morriss HUME Always looking for:-HUME plus ARCHER-Cradley Herts, 1840---BEAL(E) - Sheffield 1880 BROOKES-Rotherham BROGDEN - Collingham York 1851 1860---BUCKLAND-Nottingham 1880 BURTON- Sheffield 1910---CARLTON-Sutton on Forest Yorks. 1730 CLARKE-Myton Hall, CLARK- Hull 1820, Yorks 1825---CROWSHAW- Sheffield 1910 HARGREAVES-West Yorks 1840---HARRISON-Nottingham 1760 HELMAN-London 1850---HOLIDAY-Kilvington York 1780 HUME- Lowestoft 1901--- LINCOLN-London 1850--- MEDD-SEAMER YORK 1901---McBRIDE- Rotherham 1850 SKELTON -York 1800---THEAKER- Sheffield 1910 STANLEY-West Hartlepool-1863 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. Don - Hi - yes, I have one of these Bibles - and to obtain it I did indeed have to learn all of the Psalms you mention and recite them to the Superintendent of the Sunday School to prove that I knew them! That was in the late 1950's, I would be about 10 at the time - there were 4 presented in our church each year. The inscription on the front is the same as the one you quote - and still in gold leaf. Don I am sure you will get replies from the rootsweb but I am only saying that some years ago I was friendly with the Land Agent to the Wharton Estate and at The Great Yorkshire Show recall being introduced to the present head of the family. I did visit Skelton but never managed to see the Castle. I knew more of their estate at Gilling West Near Richmond as the village entered Yorkshire in Bloom and I was a Judge at the time. Also I have visited Gilling church to search for my ELGEY's. I also know that Bibles were often presented by these landed families and have seen one from Castle Howard, Viscount Morpeth, son of The Earl of Carlisle, presented them to people on the Estate. Hi Don, There is possibly a connection to Skelton Castle (That's Skelton-in-Cleveland to distinguish it from all the other Skeltons). When I was growing up in the village of Skelton-in-Cleveland the "lord of the manor" was Mrs Ringrose-Wharton. I was led to believe that the estate was in the Wharton family. There is an excellent website on the history of the village at: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bandl.danby/Index.html You might find Philip mentioned there if there is, indeed, a connection with this village. regards, Peter Appleton My Family Tree website: http:/www.tribalpages.com/tribes/pappleton3 -----Original Message----- From: Don Coulson [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 26 February 2006 16:22 To: [email protected] Subject: [NYorks] The will of Philip, Lord Wharton, 1696 Hi Everyone, I have in my possession a Holy Bible presented in 1913 to my Aunt. Following research I am doing on the Plews Brewery of Bedale Aiskew and Leeming Bar I am trying to find out what the above term means. It relates to a property that is owned by one Henry Plews as listed in the Inhabitants of Bedale 1839 and described as a maltkiln. He rents the adjacent property from the local gentry, Miss Pierce which is described as a Brewery, House and Yard etc. It was still being occupied by the family some 40 years later and still stands today as a fine Georgian house. Look forward to hearing from anyone.

Following research I am doing on the Plews Brewery of Bedale and Leeming Bar it has come to my attention that the founder Henry Plews, or his son, also Henry Plews, became Chief Constable of probably the Wapentake of Hang East. The exact text is as follows Page 487 states "Old Henry Plews then took the Rand, He had to Bedale come, Chief Constable, and wanted land, And Brewer, he was one" The notes attached to this verse state as follows; Mr Plews commenced brewing in Aiskew, and was made Chief Constable, after the death of Mr Pickering of Crakehall. From a small beginning, and the length of forty year, successfully carried on as a common brewer. Perhaps Mr Henry Plews of Bedale can vie, for extent of business in ale, porter and malting, with any of the like concern in the North Riding. 1838, the heavy and most laborious work is done by steam. The boiler holds 16 gallons, and one cooler holds 792 gallons, besides which in use is another three - (My original thought was that Henry Plews commenced brewing brewing in Bedale but Hird now throws a spanner in the works on that theory!) Would appreciate any info on how to trace any records on Chief Constables and also what their duties were/would be. Should anyone have any info on Plews Brewery or Plews family I would welcome that also.
