    3. I have an interest in the name GRAHAM from the witton and hauxwell areas. Elizabeth GRAHAM married Samuel WHITLING in 1876 at Bedale. I think from the 1881 census Samuel was working as a "Cartman at the Hall" at Hauxwell Hall. If this is in relation to any of the names your looking at let me know :-) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Samantha" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 07, 2006 6:02 PM Subject: [NYorks] Fw: [Yorkshire] SURNAME INTERESTS > >> Hi Listers: >> >> These are some of my Yorkshire surname interests, 1700's to present: >> >> BINKS - West Witton >> ETHERINGTON - West Witton >> EWBANK - West Witton >> GRAHAM - West Witton >> HARKER - West Witton >> METCALFE - Yorkshire >> PRATT - Yorkshire >> PRESTON - Ampleforth >> PRINGLE - Ampleforth >> RENDER - West Witton >> REYNALD (All variants) - West Witton >> WILSON - West Witton >> >> Would love to hear from anyone with connections. >> >> Samantha, Tampa, FL, USA >> >> >> >> >> >> ==== ENG-YORKSHIRE Mailing List ==== >> TO post a message to the list for *every* subscriber to read, please >> *always* use - >> [email protected] >> >> ============================== >> Search Family and Local Histories for stories about your family and the >> areas they lived. 3. Hi Ailsa, Go to www.118118,com/search , select the "Business Search" option & enter "Cherry Garth Residential Home" for the business name. For the address enter "Sowerby, Thirsk, Yorkshire". This brings up only one entry:- Cherry Garth Home, Chapel Street, THIRSK, North Yorkshire. YO7 1LX. Phone 01845 523189. I know Thirsk, but not well enough to know where Chapel Street is. I also know that Sowerby is part of Thirsk. Hope that this is of some help in your quest. Cheers, Don.

    3. Hello List My thanks go out to Martin, Terry and Michelle for their swift replies. I have been looking for Mary Jackson for a long time. Being in Canada is a bit of a bind. I do have Ancestry.com but they do not have many records available for North & East riding, nor Cumberland where my Elliot research takes me. I am from the area, having been born in Bulmer. so thankfully I do know the area pretty well. Michelle, I think I have to agree with you that the Mary born to Thomas Jackson and Jane Barker looks very interesting. I have vague memories of my father and grandmother refering to the "Barkers" . Sadly they are all gone now and I didnt ask all the right questions at the time. Mary Jackson and James Gascoigne's daughter would appear to have been an invalid all her life and her mother was her nurse, Jane did not marry, and they did have another daughter called Elizabeth, She was born Nov 30th 1836 in Howsham. There may have been another child between Elizabeth and Ellen born Aug 10 1840 in Sheepsridge Huddersfield but I have not come across another child from the census records I have the following children. including possibly another set of twins. ( I do know that Gaskin and Gascoign seemed to be interchangeable, and about 4 years ago I was in contact with some one had come across this in his family.) Jane 1822 born Kirkby moorside (now possibly Jane Gaskin born 2 Sept 1821?) James and Thomas Aug 17 1823 Leavening ? Robert May 16 1825 Acklam by Malton Matthew oct 12 1827 Scrayingham Jackson Feb 8 1830 " Charles Nov 8 1832 " John Oct 14 1834 " Elizabeth Nov 30 1836 Ellen Aug 10 1840 Huddersfield In 1861 Mary was the Head of house (sick nurse) living in Welburn with her daughter Jane (invalid) and daughter Elizabeth Summers and grand daughter Sarah Summers age 6 months Elizabeth was listed as married but her husband was not with them In 1871 Mary was once again back in East Acklam. This time her grand daughter Jane E Elliot was with her. Jane Elizabeth went on to marry a James Dunn, and she was drownd when the Empress of Ireland sank in the St. Lawrence seaway in 1914 She was the daughter of Akins Elliot and Ellen Gascoigne, James Gascoigne was not on the 1851 census and Mary was Head of Household listed as Widow. I have not so far found a death for James but Mary returned to Acklam by this time. Mary (Jackson) Gascoigne died sometime between 1871 and 1881 and her daughter Ellen Elliot died in 1921 aged 81. I would dearly love to know who Mary Jacksons siblings were and anything else you may have on the family I am so excited just getting replies but this is stupendous!!! If I can be of assistance to anyone in return I will be glad to assist. Many thanks Cynthia, Ontario

    1. RE: [NYorks] New Lister - Jacksons of Kirkbymoorside
    2. Michele
    3. Hi Cynthia, Welcome to the list. My husband has JACKSON connections in Kirkby Moorside so we have collected some data from the parish registers. There are four Mary/Maria JACKSON's christened there in the period 1795 to 1803: 5 May 1795 - Mary (born 25 April 1795) 1st child of George Jackson, innkeeper of Kirby Moorside. Mother- Mary, daughter of John Grundon. 28 February 1796 - Maria (born 25 February 1796) daughter of Margaret Jackson of Kirby Moorside. 2 July 1797 - Mary (born 2 June 1797) 1st child of William Jackson of FD (Farndale), son of William and Mary Jackson of FD(Farndale). Mother- Sally, daughter of John and Sarah Garret (or Garnet?) of FD(Farndale). 26 September 1798 - Mary (born 21 September 1798) 3rd child and 3rd daughter of Thomas Jackson of Kirby, son of William Jackson of Kirby and Eliz. Moon. Mother- Jane, daughter of Stephen and Jane Barker of Sinnington. Four options probably just confuses the issue even more for you but there are a lot of JACKSON's in Kirkby. However, looking at the IGI Batch Numbers for Kirkby Moorside christenings and putting in the name GASCOIGNE, pulls out the following- 2 September 1821 - Jane GASKIN to James and Mary GASKIN 2 September 1821 - Elizabeth GASKIN to James and Mary GASKIN It looks like there were twins. If as you say James' mother was Elizabeth, is it possible that the correct Mary JACKSON is the last one of the four above, whose mother was Jane, suggesting that twin girls were named for their two grandmothers? Just a theory but perhaps one to consider. Maybe it would be worth asking the list if someone is able to check out Kirkby parish register at Northallerton CRO, for the exact details of the GASKIN christenings on 2 Sep. 1821, there may be more information there to give you a clue. When you've pinned down the right Mary get back to me, I might be able to help with earlier JACKSON's. TITLEY: De WITT. - On July 6, 1927, at All Saints' Cathedral, Nairobi, Kenya Colony, Edward Addison TITLEY, of Thomson's Falls, only son of John Edward Addison Titley, of Harrogate, England, to Eileen Vera De WITT, elder daughter of Horace Matthew De WITT, of Purley, England.' Eileen Vera De WITT (who was registered at birth as Eileen Vera WITT, that being her original family name) was my cousin. Anybody heard of any of 'em? Yours, etc. Geoffrey Woollard in Cambridgeshire.

    3. Hello I am new to this list but after reading the "Archived " mailings for the past two years I think this is where I should be. My interest is in a MARY JACKSON. She claimed to be born in Kirkby Moorside around 1799. from the 1851 census she said 1803 but on all other census returns she had about 1799. Problem 1) the only births for mary jacksons I could find were for one born to a George and Mary Jackson 05 May 1796 and another to a Margaret Jackson 28 Feb 1796, no father given. (Not sure if she is one of these) We know she married James Gascoigne 26 Aug 1822 in Scrayingham. James was the son of Nicholas Gascoigne and Elizabeth Mason born June 10 1801 Problem 2) There was another marriage of a James Gascoigne and Mary Jackson at St. Olaves, York 09 July 1821. Both couples had a son George born 1 year apart. and they both lived in East Acklam and Leavening. (This Mary would appear to have been born in York) The LDS have them both mixed up. One George was born in York and christened in York 07 Aug 1822. The other was born in Leavening 17 Aug 1823. The latter being my family. between them they would appear to have had three wives. (Cann't be sure which was mine) The Mary and James Gascoigne had their first child Jane in Kirkbymoorside in 1822, no birth date given as this was from the 1861 census. After this date the couple moved around and had further children in Leavening, Scrayingham, Howsham and Sheepsridge, Huddersfield. James was a Wheelwright and Blacksmith. By the 1851 census Mary was a widow and living in East Acklam. Their youngest daughter, Ellen married my Great Grandfather, Akins Elliot in Acklam. Would love to know if anyone has found a Mary who might fit this picture. and who her parents were. I also have Milners mainly from Settrington, but they were never still either. Any help would be gratefully recieved Cynthia - Ontario Canada

    3. Hi All, just noticed someone mention strolling bands. Just wondered if anyone has information on the various bands that were hired out to passenger ships, such as the Titanic in the 1900's. The lead violinist on the Titanic, (the film showed him to be tall, dark and handsome, as well as a talented musician) was a certain John Hume, however at the Titanic memorial in Southampton is name is mis-spelt to include an 'L'. As the ship went down, John carried on playing and his body was recovered and buried in Fairfax Cemetery Nova Scotia. However, his parents who lived in Glasgow were sent a bills of some 12s. for the loss of his uniform. As he wasn't a member of the crew, he must have been hired out, is there any records of these 'hiring's, did he play on any other ships etc, would be pleased to hear of any more information. 1. Re: [NYorks] Ailsa Petrie: a question!
    2. Ailsa Petrie
    3. Laura, I don't think you are barking up the wrong tree at all, I think it is a distant branch by marriage of my own. And you have solved one question for me! I had previously looked and looked for Richard Steel on the 1901 census index, with no success. Never thought to look under Dick and Steel was spelt with an e on the end as well. I do think it is the correct family, most of these people married others within the same district, so I had reasoned that Richard would have been born somewhere near Knayton. I have the MIs for South Otterington Parish. A few years ago I went to great expense, considering the currency exchange rate, to purchase a few. I found these entries, which you may already have - "In loving memory of John 2nd son of Joseph & Emma Steel of Leach Green d. 2 Jan 1894 aged 19 yrs. Also Joseph Steel father of the above d. 17 May 1925 aged 83 yrs. Peacefully resting." "In loving memory of Emma beloved wife of the late Joseph Steel d. 31 Mar 1941 aged 90yrs. Also George Bielby son of the above d. 31 Jan 1941 aged 50yrs." "In loving memory of Mary Hannah Steel bn 4 Mar 1877 d. 4 Jun 1968. At rest." Re your comment about Richard inheriting Knayton Grange. Was there more than one farm at Knayton Grange? Would it be more likely that Richard was a tenant farmer? There used to be a system whereby three generations of one family were guaranteed tenure, it was called "copyhold". If my Hamilton family had the farm under that scheme, Richard's marriage to Eliza may have seen him slot in as the third generation. Especially as Eliza's brother had so recently died. It wasn't until the 1920s, I think, that people were encouraged to buy the land they farmed. Only the very wealthy actually owned land, my family were all tenant farmers for centuries. If you go back through the list archives for 2002, there was a thread on this subject called "property tenures". Where in the world, do you live? If it is the UK, have you ever purchased the wills of any of your ancestors? If someone had died around the time of Richard's marriage, the will might give a clue to any inheritance. I have rambled on. Keep on nibbling away at it, I feel very sure that we are talking about the same family.
