Hi Would anyone on the Noth Yorkshire and Durham lists be able to advise me on a matter of terminology in wills? I have the will of William Saer of South Kilvington 1597 in which he refers to several brothers, a son, and Masters John, George, Richard, etc. All with the surname Saer. I dont know whether the word Master is referring to his sons, or more likely, his brothers, but then why would he call some Brothers and some Master?? Here is an excerpt from the transcription as an example: It[e]m I give and bequeath my whole title and Interest of my farme in Kilvington aforesayed unto John my sonne, in considerac{i}o[n] of his child[e]s porc{i}on. It[e]m I give unto my master M[aste]r John Saer xxs. It[e]m I give unto M[aste]r George Saer xs and to wife xs and to M[ist]res Westrop xs. It[e]m I give unto M[aste]r Richard Saer[e]s eldest sonne iijli vjs viijd. It[e]m I give to my brother Frauncis Saer[e]s children 2 xli. It[e]m I give unto my sister Elizabeth Gowland xs. It[e]m I give unto my brother Leonard [? Cust[er] ] the lease of his farme at Rounton...................................... It[e]m I give unto Elizabeth my daughter my fowre greate oxen............................................................. The rest of all my good[e]s moveable and unmoveable the thirdes excepted w[hi]ch belonge unto Margaret my wyfe and my debt[e]s legacies and funerall expences discharged & deducted I give unto Elizabeth my saied daughter whome I make my full and sole executrix of this my will. It[e]m I com[m]itt the tuition of my sonne John Saer and his porc[i[on unto my m[aste]r master John Saier yf it please him to take him It[e]m I com[m]itt the tuition of my daughter Elizabeth and her legacie and porc{i}on unto R[o]b[er]t Tholthropp of Threske and Elizabeth his wyfe and yf my saied master master john Saer shall refuse to take uppon him the tuition of my saied sonne then I com[m]itt the tuition of him also and his porc{i}on unto the sayd Robert Tholthroppe & Elizabeth hi wife and lastlie I will that when my sonne John Saer shall come to twentie yeares of age he enioyinge my farme as I he shall that shall give unto my saied daughter Elizabeth twentie poundes of Good and lawefull englishe money to amend her marriage withall ....................... So, what are these relationships, any thoughts? Finally, I note that responsibility of daughter Elizabeth's education was given to Robert Tholthropp and wife Elizabeth. I initially thought that was William;s brother in law and sister until I saw separate mention of sister Elizabeth Gowland. Was it the custom for friends rather than relatives to be given care of a child's education when one parent was still alive? Thanks Laurel Sayer (researching all instances of Sayer and varients in Yorkshire and Durham)
Many thanks to all those who have replied regarding the old silent films. It really is amazing how requests for obscure information results in a flood of interesting replies. Hi everyone, Just enjoyed watching three Buster Keaton movies from the 1918 era. Very funny and caused a lot of thought. Two of which are, 1. Was the music played on the piano issued with the film, or did the pianist make it up as he went? and 2. What would the pianist enter down as his job occupation, a pianist or cinemagraphic accompanist. Still looking for any HUME's out there plus the 'other lot'. regards John in a cold but dry Nottingham John Morriss HUME Always looking for:-HUME plus ARCHER-Cradley Herts, 1840---BEAL(E) - Sheffield 1880 BROOKES-Rotherham BOIK- SCOTLAND, SOUTH AFRICA, London BROGDEN - Collingham York 1851 1860---BUCKLAND-Nottingham 1880 BURTON- Sheffield 1910---CARLTON-Sutton on Forest Yorks. 1730 CLARKE-Myton Hall, CLARK- Hull 1820, Yorks 1825---CROWSHAW- Sheffield 1910 HARGREAVES-West Yorks 1840---HARRISON-Nottingham 1760 HELMAN-London 1850---HOLIDAY-Kilvington York 1780 HUME- Lowestoft 1901--- LINCOLN-London 1850--- MEDD-SEAMER YORK 1901---McBRIDE- Rotherham 1850 SKELTON -York 1800---THEAKER- Sheffield 1910 STANLEY-West Hartlepool-1863 -- ---------------------------------------- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. Hi all - just a quickie! Has anyone heard of a Rostock Terrace in Middlesbrough? I have a family living there in the 1860's, and on the 2 records I've got it looks like Rostock both times, but I can't find any reference or mention to a Rostock Terrace anywhere. Am I mis-reading it? Many thanks for any suggestions! Gill

Hello sorry for the delay in reply! I really couldnt say if there was a connection or not, from the census i sent to you the date of Elizabeth being born in 1854 matches up nicely to the information you sent me. I just havnt been down that family line yet, so i really couldnt tell if those are her parents, but now im interested to find out if they are! I have a marriage for Elizabeth GRAHAM and Samuel WHITLING on Jun 1876 at Bedale. To confuse things, i think Samuel may have had a brother Robert, as he also shows up on the census as being born in Bedale area and also married to an Elizabeth but living in Newbottle, Durham. So, perhaps a connection, but something i will just have to keep working at. I hope that helps, i really havnt done much on the GRAHAM line, but if i catch up soon and find anything i will let you know what i find. :-) Regards, Laura ----- Original Message ----- From: "Samantha" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, March 09, 2006 3:04 PM Subject: Re: [NYorks] Fw: [Yorkshire] SURNAME INTERESTS > Hi Laura: > > I do have a Elizabeth GRAHAM, b. 1854, West Witton, Yorkshire, daughter of > William GRAHAM, b. 1822, West Witton and Dorothy Lambert, b. 1821, West > Witton. Hi I also have Featherstones in my tree. My g-g-grandfather John Newsam of Kirkbymoorside married Christiana Featherstone in Lastingham Church in 1850. Christiana lived with her parents, Robert & Christiana at Ash House, a farm at the head of Farndale,I believe she had 3 brothers and a sister but I do not know their names. Christiana - daughter, was born about 1824, and was the youngest child of the family. Does this connect her with any other Featherstones that people know about? Margaret Southern

Hi Mark: No it was QE II although he'd be too old to still be there. It wasn't until I started reading about how many of your relatives worked for - dare we say it - nobility, that I thought there may be a possibility that there was some truth to the "chef story" - knowing how the royals like to chose from staff who have a history with the peerage. Anyway they always called him Dickie Featherstone so perhaps his name was Richard. I would assume a birthdate of about 1905 to 1930 - somewhere in there and I believe his relations lived somewhere between Seamer (possibly in the village) and Staxton Hill which I think is west or s. west of Seamer (there's a very quaint pub up there by the way) anyway I haven't been around that area for forty years so I could be all wet. I still have relatives in Seamer that I correspond with (nothing so fancy as email though) I could ask and maybe get the story (if there is one) straight. Its up to you. Hello All, Thank you all for the rapid reply to my question - you must be burning the midnight oil in the UK! I had wondered if it might be a residential home. I can find no telephone directory entry of a place called "Cherry Garth". Does it go under a different name? Good morning from New Zealand, I have found a parish register burial entry for 1974 and the address of the deceased at the time of death is given as "Clarry Garth, Sowerby". Is anyone able to throw some light on this address, please? Was it a private home, private hospital, home for the elderly? Would there be any possibility of finding the name of the occupier, if it was a private home? Of course, it may have been the deceased's home, I don't know. The deceased was a 74 year old widow, with no family of her own. Nieces and nephews, perhaps, but no children. Many thanks Ailsa Petrie Hamilton New Zealand -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Version: 7.1.375 / Virus Database: 268.2.0/276 - Release Date: 7/03/2006
