    3. Thanks Lancelot. I live in Middlesbrough and had no idea Horsefield St was still there. 3. Hi Dennis, Yes my Hunter ancestors do indeed come from Co.Durham. The main locations are Sunderland, South Shields, Gateshead, and Whickam. Many were blacksmiths employed in the shipbuilding industry. So far I've managed to get back to 1790 with certainty and possibly to 1709 with a little imagination. I need to check out some parish records. Family lore said we had a scottish connection but so far I have not discovered it. What I have discovered is that there were an awful lot of Hunters around in the north east. If I find a connection I'll let you know. 1. NRY names HIRST, RUSSELL,BOWES, STAINTHORP,MYLES,SIMPSON, SMITH
    2. Jenny De Angelis
    3. I have not posted my surname interests for the North Yorks area for some time now so thought I ought to put that right as there now seem to be a few new listers. Here are a few details of each name to see if anything rings any bells. HIRST - first names such as Godfrey, Edwin, Francis, Richard, Jonathan, Thomas, Henry & Dorothy in. The first Godfrey Hirst I have was born at Owston WRY around 1735 and married Dorothy DUNHILL of Pontefract in 1770 they then ran the Golden Lion coaching inn in Northalleton High Street until Godfrey's death in 1807. They had 11 children all born at the Golden Lion and after Godfrey's death his son Francis ran the inn until his own death in the 1830s. Godfrey and Dorothy's Gt. grandson was another Godfrey born 1811 son of Edwin Hirst and Jane LIDDLE. Godfrey later married Anne RUSSELL in 1841 and became my 2 x Gt. Grandparents. Their son Edwin born 1842, my Gt. Grandfather. RUSSELL -Anne Russell b. 1813 Northallerton, who married Godfrey Hirst, was the dau. of Nathaniel Russell b.1783 Ingleby Arncliffe, and his wife Hannah STAINTHORP, Hannah was the dau. of Thomas Stainthorpe farmer of Brompton by Northallerton. Nathaniel was the son of an earlier Nathaniel Russell and his wife Mary SIMPSON. This older Nathaniel was born about 1748 at Ingleby Arncliffe the son of Jacob Russell and his wife Christiana MYLES. This 1748 born Nathaniel had a grocers shop in the High St. Northallerton and was also noted in records as being a flax dresser. Jacob Russell was born about 1712 at Ingleby Arncliffe the son of an earlier Jacob and his wife Elizabeth SMITH poss. dau. of Christopher Smith of West Harlsey. Christiana Myles was born around 1712 too at East Harlsey I believe she was the daughter of a Robert Myles but don't know anything about the Myles family to date. The earlier Jacob was born about 1682 bapt. at Hawnby that year, son of William Russell born C. 1647 and Anne Bowes. William and Anne had 8 known children at Hawnby. There is some mystery about William Russell's father who, as family tales have it, disappeared during the Civil war when he was taken away and never seen again, his wife and child, young William presumably, ended up living with one of their tennant farmers somewhere around the Hawnby Snilesworth area. Who took the man away, or whether he just died in battle, and when this occurred is not clear but there must be something in it somewhere. Thankyou for reading this far. Regards Jenny DeAngelis Spain.

Go to http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx and make your search. There is also a link to the Free BMD transcript from here so make sure you select the GRO Index itself and not FreeBMD. 3. Hi Bryan, I have a couple of documents that were transcribed by Walt Norris (Barnsley area) relating to the regiment, on the Genuki Yorkshire site - see under "Military" on the main Genuki Yorkshire page. From the information there, it appears that it was more likely based in the Barnsley/Wakefield area. That wouldn't of course stop someone from Lythe joining. 3. Hi Bryan, I have several different military connections in my family tree: ranging from a Chelsea Pensioner of the 44th Foot from the Napoleonic era, via Yorkshire Regiment in the Boer War and the Great War, to Royal Army Service Corps and Royal Air Force in WWII. The following web site is a useful one to start getting some background to any British Army regiment: http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/lists/bargts.htm Once you have a feel for what the regiment was doing at a point in time - and where it was doing it - try Googling with various keywords. There is a surprising amount of information available online on some quite obscure aspects of military matters. There are also specialist military Mailing Lists on Rootsweb covering some of the major wars (WWII, WW1, Boer War, Napoleonic War, etc.) Feel free to come back with more questions if you want to. regards, Peter Appleton My Family Tree website: http:/www.tribalpages.com/tribes/pappleton3 -----Original Message----- From: Bryan & Jenny [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 30 March 2006 11:39 To: [email protected] Subject: [NYorks] Yorkshire regiments My ggggrandfather, John Ottey served with the 65th Regiment of Foot and was then Quarter master with 60th Regiment of Kings Rifles.
