A friend's ancestor, William PREST gave his birth place as Red Hill, Yorkshire in the 1851 census for Moulton. William's daughter in law said that she was born in Redmire. We can't find any reference to either place in North Yorkshire. There is a Red Hill in the West Riding but it doesn't seem to be the one we are seeking. Please could anyone tell me if they have heard of either of these places? Many thanks, Maureen
Hi Jenny I have only one Bowes; Ann or Hannah bap 20 Jan 1712 at Hawnby, daughter of John (David) Bowes, a farmer at Snilesworth. She married William Tireman on 27 Nov 1735. I have traced the Tireman descendants should you ever find that you are linked to Ann Bowes. Hi Jennie My Jane Bowes was born 1800 Hutton Cranwick Yorkshire. Bowes seems to be a very common name in Yorkshire. Jane married Edward Henderson at the parish of Stanwick St John. They resided in Caldwell. I believe Jane died in 1834. Edward married Mary Ward in Nov 1835 also at Stanwick St. John. One of thier children Jonathan born 1822 was my GGGrandfather. Hope that tells my Bowes connection. Hi Jenny I have a Jane Bowes... -----Original Message----- From: Jenny De Angelis [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, April 03, 2006 9:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [NYorks] NRY names HIRST, RUSSELL,BOWES, STAINTHORP,MYLES,SIMPSON, SMITH I have not posted my surname interests for the North Yorks area for some time now so thought I ought to put that right as there now seem to be a few new listers. Here are a few details of each name to see if anything rings any bells. HIRST - first names such as Godfrey, Edwin, Francis, Richard, Jonathan, Thomas, Henry & Dorothy in. The first Godfrey Hirst I have was born at Owston WRY around 1735 and married Dorothy DUNHILL of Pontefract in 1770 they then ran the Golden Lion coaching inn in Northalleton High Street until Godfrey's death in 1807. They had 11 children all born at the Golden Lion and after Godfrey's death his son Francis ran the inn until his own death in the 1830s. Godfrey and Dorothy's Gt. grandson was another Godfrey born 1811 son of Edwin Hirst and Jane LIDDLE. Godfrey later married Anne RUSSELL in 1841 and became my 2 x Gt. Grandparents. Their son Edwin born 1842, my Gt. Grandfather. RUSSELL -Anne Russell b. 1813 Northallerton, who married Godfrey Hirst, was the dau. of Nathaniel Russell b.1783 Ingleby Arncliffe, and his wife Hannah STAINTHORP, Hannah was the dau. of Thomas Stainthorpe farmer of Brompton by Northallerton. Nathaniel was the son of an earlier Nathaniel Russell and his wife Mary SIMPSON. This older Nathaniel was born about 1748 at Ingleby Arncliffe the son of Jacob Russell and his wife Christiana MYLES. This 1748 born Nathaniel had a grocers shop in the High St. Northallerton and was also noted in records as being a flax dresser. Jacob Russell was born about 1712 at Ingleby Arncliffe the son of an earlier Jacob and his wife Elizabeth SMITH poss. dau. of Christopher Smith of West Harlsey. Christiana Myles was born around 1712 too at East Harlsey I believe she was the daughter of a Robert Myles but don't know anything about the Myles family to date. The earlier Jacob was born about 1682 bapt. at Hawnby that year, son of William Russell born C. 1647 and Anne Bowes. William and Anne had 8 known children at Hawnby. There is some mystery about William Russell's father who, as family tales have it, disappeared during the Civil war when he was taken away and never seen again, his wife and child, young William presumably, ended up living with one of their tennant farmers somewhere around the Hawnby Snilesworth area. Who took the man away, or whether he just died in battle, and when this occurred is not clear but there must be something in it somewhere. Thankyou for reading this far. Can anyone out there tell a relative notice how to obtain a copy of a will made in the 1960's/70's. It has been collected from the solicitors but no one has seen it since. Is it possible to obtain a copy and where from? Slighty off topic I know but any help would be greatly appreciated. regards Joanne

Hi Derek and Dennis Any Hunter's from the Alnwick Northumberland area in either tree? I am twice related to that branch. I suspect they were from Scotland also but have no definite eveidense yet. The main locations are Sunderland, South Shields, Gateshead, and Whickam. Many were blacksmiths employed in the shipbuilding industry. So far I've managed to get back to 1790 with certainty and possibly to 1709 with a little imagination. I need to check out some parish records. Family lore said we had a scottish connection but so far I have not discovered it. What I have discovered is that there were an awful lot of Hunters around in the north east. If I find a connection I'll let you know. Regards Derek, Norfolk,England ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dennis M.
