    1. [ENG-NORTH-YORKS] William SMITH b. 1777
    2. Hello All, I would be most thankful if someone has a chance of looking up in the church record books, the burial of William SMITH b. 1777 Thirsk. Knowing his death date might tell me where the SMITH family once lived in Thirsk.... William is the one that probably inherited the family farm, if there was one. William SMITH's brother, John SMITH b. 1778 immigrated to the USA and John died in 1860 in Dearborn County, Indiana. Thanks again for any help that might be offered. Kind regards, Margaret L. 3. Hi Margaret, I see that you had several replies about your query on Birdforth. However, not one of them actually got it right ! All of them pointed you at the village but they should have pointed you at the wapentake. A look at the Genuki Yorkshire pages will sort this out for you. Thirsk is/was in the wapentake of Birdforth, hence the reason Birdford comes after "Thirsk". On the Genuki Yorkshire main page (URL in my signature) you will see at the top a link to "Where is it in Yorkshire" pages. If you look up Birdford in those pages you will find there are two entries. If you follow them, one takes you to a short description of the village along with a photo. of the church etc. and the other takes you to the "definitions of terms" page where you will find a definition of "wapentake". There's a link to the definitions of terms page from the main Yorkshire page too. You will also find maps etc. for Yorkshire - a total of well over 15,000 pages. Best wishes, Colin Hinson In the village of Blunham in Bedfordshire U.K. Webmaster for the Genuki Yorkshire pages: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ Old and Rare Yorkshire Books on searchable CDroms: http://cdroms.blunham.com/ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >Hello Everyone, > >On my family name of SMITH living around Thirsk in the 1700s & early >1800s I find the following: > >SMITH, Jacob born 13 Jan. 1815 Thirsk, Birdforth, North Riding, >Yorkshire, England. > >Question: Can someone explain the place called, "Birdforth" ? > >Thank you all ---I know this is hoping that someone can explain Birdforth. > >Kind regards, >Margaret L >Maryland USA

    1. [ENG-NORTH-YORKS] Thomas SMITH 1741
    2. Hello Everyone, Is there someone that can do a look-up for a death? Parish Thirsk--- Here is what I know of my SMITH family.----- In 1818 John SMITH and his wife Jane WAYNE immigrated, with their family and Elizabeth Brown SMITH, mother of John to the USA. They settled in Dearborn County, Indiana. I am assuming that Elizabeth Brown SMITH, b. 1750 who died in Indiana in 1823, had already buried her husband, Thomas SMITH born 1741, Thirsk. Question: Can anyone located at Thirsk the date of burial for Thomas SMITH b. 1741 ? I am trying to locate the land/farm/place where my SMITH family once lived; thus I feel that I need to find a will if one was written. Thanks for any help. Margaret L. 3. Margaret . The info I gave you came from a publication Published in 1859 .when the population is given as 49 persons .The hamlet consisted of 3 farmhouses and a few cottages .At that time it was a Chapelry along with Sessay and Hutton .Prior to 1715 the Church or Chapel was served by the Vicar of Thirkleby . 3. Margaret , In case you are interested in the name of the place .... I quote " It derives its name from the ford which ,in Roman times ,crossed the stream of water here .Bird and Brid are often used as synonyms in the Saxon language ,and it is conjectured that it's etymology may be from brid or broad in connexion with the ford ." This would be a tribal meeting place . At times the chief would assemble the tribe ,stick his sword in the ground and the warriors would ,in turn , touch the sword with their own weapons to prove their allegiance . Hence the term Wapentake (Weapontake) which now refers to an area hence the Birdforth Wapentake . Hope this adds a bit of background to your research . Best Wishes , Harry . Ambleside .
