    3. In my wife's line there is : George John FREELAND, b. 1835/1838? Portsmouth, Hampshire; m. (1867) Harriott Ann ROBERTS, b, 1849 Liverpool. They had various children in Liverpool between 1867 and 1880. However, GJF, described as a 'ship rigger' living in Everton at the 1871 census, had died before the 1881 census. At that time the children were with Harriot in Toxteth Park apart from the eldest son, 9-year old George William, who was an inmate at the Liverpool Seamans Orphan Institution. He was employed and back with the family at the 1891 census. Currently, the charity indicates that it will consider applications on behalf of the children of deceased British merchant seafarers. Can any one tell me whether ship riggers would have gone to sea or, at that period, did the Institution also accept applications from the children of workers in maritime-related trades? (This, and other matters, means that a visit to the Archives section of the Liverpool Maritime Museum is a high priority when next I manage to get to Liverpool.) John Greig
