I was able to find Joseph in 1851 census in Liverpool (he was listed as Josh Nichols) age 22, Dale Street, occupation painter. I have not been able to find him in 1861 census, or a marriage record (yet) for Joseph Nicholls and Susannah Smith. I found him in 1871 in England~ Joseph Nicholls and Susannah were living in North Meols, Lancashire County, England. Joseph Nicholls was listed as head of family, age 42, painter, born in Liverpool, Lancashire County, England. Susannah, his wife, was age 38, born in Tranmere, Cheshire County, England Children listed were Adalaide Nicholls, age 4 and Robert age 3 (both born in Southport, Lancashire County, England).I found Adelaide in BMD, but not Robert. Robert's marriage and death records (and census records) in the USA all list Benares India as place of birth.
