    3. Hello Alan, This question crops up quite often - usually a Nurse child is one that a family has taken in ( and this could mean by family such as grandparents). Some parishes paid for infants and children to be cared for outside the Workhouse as this was generally cheaper. Some arrangements were private, more or less like fostering arrangements today. Babies who were orphaned or born to single mothers who had to work are often listed with other families, again being shown as Nurse child, in this case probably because the mother in the family they are living with had a similar aged child - no formula milk then! Very rarely Nurse child is a term used to describe older girls who would care for babies whilst the mothers worked.
