Seen in passing: The Times, Monday, March 8, 1909, Issue 38901, Page 8 Column D "DOCK ACCIDENT AT BIRKENHEAD. LOSS OF FOURTEEN LIVES. Fourteen lives were lost by the accident which occurred early on Saturday morning ... on the estate of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board at Birkenhead. ... a new dock, known as the Vittoria Dock, was in course of construction. The contractor ... is Mr. John Scott, of Darlington. ... [at] about 25 minutes past midnight ... the foundation of the coffer dam gave way, and the 15 men were immediately overwhelmed in the rush of water ... one of them escaped, George Creighton, a craneman, of Flamank-street, Birkenhead ... A boy named Thomas Devine, of Oak View, Birkenhead, who was signaller on the crane, and David Jones, 35, of Newling-street, Birkenhead ... were both rescued. ... [Devine's] right leg was crushed, and had to be amputated on his arrival at the borough hospital, where he lies in a critical condition. Jones, the engine-driver ... is making satisfactory progress. Kelly, or M'Nicolas (32), single, St. Paul's-road, Birkenhead. James Keefe, married, Birkenhead. William Saunders, married, two children, Eldon-place, Birkenhead. William Reed, married, Church Army Home, Birkenhead. John Brown, or Darby, single, supposed to have lived in lodgings in Scotland-road, Liverpool. Robert Shaw (35), married, two children, Thomas-street, Birkenhead. John Matthews (35), married, four children, Hope-street, Birkenhead. Thomas Shaw (35), single, Market-street.
