Hi, The Mariners Homes, were indeed homes for retired sea captains [and also I think for ordinary seamen] and their wives...The big red brick building, on the top of the hill, was (I believe} a nursing home. The houses on the next hill were the houses for more agile people. The Mariners hill was a great courting place, counting the stars ,and watching the ships?????????? Happy days......... My late husband Ron and I became engaged on the Hill Easter 1956 I do know that some of the old roof tiles, that were taken off the houses when some were demolished are now on my friends roof!!!!!! I took my Australian partner there last year, and there wasn't even a seat on the hill...I hope they have finished the work that was taking place then, and that the whole area will have been updated and restored to its former glory. Didn't get along the prom this year but the Egremont area is really looking good. I can recommend the food and views from the Egremont pub...again fond memories of it in the late 50,s when the boys used to play their guitars, and because the pub didn,t have a licence somebody wo, as uld push a bell, and the guitars went under the seat, as the police checked the premises....they'd give us a wink asd they passed, because of course they had heard the music from outside Ann Higginson [nee Jones Park Road Wallasey now Melbourne Australia -----Original Message----- From: eng-merseyside-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-merseyside-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Marged Sent: Thursday, 9 November 2006 9:56 AM To: Ron Fitzpatrick; eng-merseyside@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-MERSEYSIDE] "The Mariners Homes - New Brighton" Does the picture show houses high above a grassy bank Ron? I seem to remember that we always thought that was where the sea captains lived, whose ships came into the Mersey. Sorry, but apart from that I don't know anything Marj I am an ex-pat, Born in Liverpool Raised in the Wirral area till aged 12, Emigrated with my family to Australia in 1953. What a lovely, informative piece of writing Ann. Inspires me to take a trip to Egremont soon, rather than just New Brighton (which is looking better now than it did for years) Marged Hi, The Mariners Homes, were indeed homes for retired sea captains [and also I think for ordinary seamen] and their wives...The big red brick building, on the top of the hill, was (I believe} a nursing home. The houses on the next hill were the houses for more agile people.
