My sister Jen was married to a Holden - James Keith from Mossley Hill Liverpool. His parents were James Holden and Una Johnson, also from Mossley Hill and probably Garston. Just for interest, I went to school with two sisters called Ostle, one of them was named Mimi, which we thought was very exotic. Hi Marged, Unfortunately HOLDEN in Lancashire is as difficult as JONES in Wales! My HOLDENs are a large family whose parents were Alfred HOLDEN who married Annie WAINE. The WAINE family were from Prescot. Amongst the children from this marriage were: Annie, Ada, Bessie, Bill, Alfie, Elsie-owned a hairdressers shop called Countess Ned, Harold, Joe. Hello Paul, HOLDEN is as common in Lancashire as JONES/WILLIAMS in Wales and SMITH in England - there is a James in the family line that "my" HOLDEN family descend from but I don't have much about him at all Alfred Holden married Annie WAINE (the Waine family was from Prescot). His father was Samuel HOLDEN (father William HOLDER a Carter) who married Annie DAVIES b Liverpool West Derby (father William DAVIES, a Carter) at St Clements Church in Liverpool 26th April 1868. Samuel and Annie had a large family - in 1891 they are living at Longtons Lane Rainhill, Samuel is 48 and a File Cutter born Little Woolton, Annie is 46 b West Derby and the following children are listed: William aged 22 b West Derby John aged 20 b West Derby Robert aged 18 b Rainhill * all subsequent children are also born Rainhill George aged 15 Samuel aged 13 Harry aged 10 Annie aged 7 Alfred aged 5 *who married Annie WAINE and whose children my HOLDEN connection comes from Thomas aged 2 Clara aged 2 In 1881 they were also at Longtons Lane but with Elizabeth DAVIES unmarried aged 31 listed with them. She is recorded as being "wife's sister" b Liverpool. In 1871 they were at 21 Aigburth St West Derby with just William and John, no mention of a James unfortunately! In 1861 Samuel is an apprentice file cutter aged 19 - living with Henry WHITFIELD and family and other apprentices (Henry was a file maker) at Hall Lane Rainhill. In 1851 Samuel aged 8 was living with his older brother John and his family at Grange Lane Cottages Little Woolton. John is 29 and an agricultural labourer married with a son, William, aged 4.
