Hello everyone, I'm afraid I used to "Lurk" for a while, then got into research on my Better halfs Scottish Ancestry, now a few years later I feel I must try to get to grips with my JONES and EVANS lines. I am the Great Grandson of William JONES c1828, Shrewsbury, and Elizabeth EVANS 1836, New Brighton. They married 15-3-1864, St. Pauls, Seacombe. I am also interested in WILLIAMS, through Cicely JONES 1869, Daur. of William and Elizabeth, who married Hugh Warren WILLIAMS, 17-2-1892, at Bidston Parish Church. Also I have connections to Alfred, and John GRAHAM, who in 1901 I believe had a Greengrocers business in Liscard or thereabouts. I look forward to any replies. Walter Jones.
Hello Walter As I believe I mentioned to you when we first discussed this branch of your family several years ago you and I are in fact 3rd cousins, your great-grandmother Elizabeth EVANS (b1836 New Brighton) being a full sister to my great-grandfather William EVANS (b1830 New Brighton). Both were children of John EVANS (b1800 Little Meols) and Agnes HUTCHINSON (b1803 Broughton-in-Furness, Lancashire) who were married in Wallasey St Hilary on 25 September 1825. John & Agnes EVANS' full brood was as follows :- 1826 Mary Anne (m Samuel POSTON 1864) 1828 Isabella (spinster) 1830 William (m Sarah CAMPBELL ????) (my great-grandfather) 1832 John (m Hannah COCKRELL 1858) 1834 Agnes (spinster) 1836 Elizabeth (m William JONES 1864) (your great-grandmother) 1838 Joseph (m Elizabeth NIXON 1865) 1840 Edward (d Calcutta 1857 aged 16) 1844 Eliza (d 1844) 1846 Eliza (m Charles Lemuel GOODWIN 1871) 1847 Jane (m John Price WILLIAMS 1891) John EVANS (b1800 Little Meols) was a son of William EVANS (b1775 Liverpool) and Nancy JONES (b 1880 Great Meols) who were married in Liverpool St Nicholas on 8 January 1799. William & Nancy EVANS' full brood was :- 1799 Mary Ann (m William JOHNSON 1836) 1800 John (m Agnes HUTCHINSON 1825) 1803 Thomas (m Ellen LEDSHAM 1827) 1804 George (m Ann GRIFFITHS 1830) 1808 Peter (m Ann HARRIS 1839) 1809 William (m Margaret Elizabeth CALLISTER 1836) 1811 Henry (m Barbara LEDDER 1831) 1814 Elizabeth (m Richard SHERLOCK 1832) 1816 David (bachelor) The first 4 children were all born in Little Meols, the last 5 in New Brighton. Thomas EVANS (b1803) was for many years coxswain/master of the Magazines (later the New Brighton) Lifeboat. George, Peter, William and David all became Liverpool Pilots, George being drowned when he slipped whilst transferring vessels in January 1849. William EVANS (b1775 Liverpool) was a beer-seller in the 1841 Census and in a will dated 1837 gave his address as The Mount Tavern, Liscard. His eldest son, my 2g-grandfather John EVANS (yours too, of course) was licensee of the Little Brighton Inn in Liscard from 1851 until his death in 1864, but I haven't as yet been able to establish whether this was the Mount Tavern re-named or a different establishment altogether. The licence of the Little Brighton (also known as the Little Jinny after the singer Jenny Lind whos' supposed to have once stopped there) appears to have been transferred after John's death to his son-in-law (your great-grandfather) Walter JONES who I have in my tree as born 22 October 1827 in Bicton Heath, Salop. I can take this EVANS line back to a marriage in Burton St Nicholas on 26 February 1695 should you be interested, and can link it via a marriage to a SHERLOCK line going back into the 1500's. Will write to you further off-list tomorrow.
