Hi all, Just wondering if anyone can help me out with Dixie Deans' family tree? I descend from a Jane Ledder, nee Dean who was baptised in 1798 in Wallasey. She was the daughter of Henry Dean. Murray Leonard
Hi Murray As a lifelong Evertonian, and with over 150 DEAN's in my extended family tree, I went down this road some time ago hoping against hope that the great man might prove to be a blood-relative of mine. :-) Researching his family on-line is rather unrewarding, but a major clue lies here :- http://www.oxforddnb.com/public/dnb/31018.html Which leads to this, when Dixie was still just a twinkle in his dad's eye :- 1901 Census RG13/3393 folio 162 page 32 William DEAN, 28, railway engine stoker, CHS Chester Sarah B, wife, 25, CHS Chester Elsie M, daur, 4, CHS Birkenhead Florence M, daur, 1, CHS Birkenhead Sarah A, daur, 1 month, CHS Birkenhead Louise BRETT, sister-in-law, S, 21, cook domestic, CHS Chester Dennis, brother-in-law, 16, railway engine cleaner, CHS Chester Gilbert BERESFORD, boarder, S, 18, railway engine cleaner, CHS Chester And this, to find Dixie's paternal grandmother :- 1891 Census RG12/2863 folio 70 page 24 85 Christleton Road, Chester Mary E DEAN, W, 42, chapel keeper, YKS Thirsk Sarah H, daur, S, 20, mother's help, CHS Chester William, son, 18, railway stoker, CHS Chester John, son, 16, railway engine cleaner, CHS Chester And to find both his paternal grandparents together :- 1881 Census RG11/3557 folio 21 page 40 85 Christleton Road, Chester Thomas DEAN, 33, chapel keeper & gardener, CHS Chester Mary E, wife, 33, YKS Sandhutton Sarah H, daur, 10, CHS Cheshire William, son, 8, CHS Chester John, son, 6, CHS Chester Thomas Henry, son, 4, CHS Chester Chas FLETCHER, lodger, 23, railway porter. Incidentally, you and I are almost certainly related one way or another, since Jane DEAN (b1798 Wallasey) features in my extended family tree. If I'm not mistaken, Jane had an aunt Jenny DEAN (b1757 Wallasey) who married a William GARNER and had a daughter Elizabeth (b1786 Wallasey) who married John EVANS on 1 June 1808 in Wallasey St Hilary? John & Elizabeth (Dean) EVANS' son William (b1810 Seacombe) married, on 17 August 1835 in Liverpool St Nicholas, my first cousin 4 times removed Mary SHERLOCK (b1819 Great Meols). There's also a close association between my EVANS family and the LEDDERs which might be pursuing some time, one of my 7g-grandfather's being a John LEATHER (b1632 Puddington), whose grandaughter Ann LEADER married John EVANS (b1704 Puddington) on 26 February 1739 in Burton St Nicholas. There's a history of the name mutating from the original LEATHER used in South-east Wirral in the early 1600's, via LEEDER and LEADER to the eventual LEDDER in Wallasey by the mid-1700's. I'd be particularly interested to know whether you have any detailed information regarding the parents of Jane DEAN's husband Edward LEDDER, born 1797 in Wallasey?
