Sorry about all those "tests", but it was such a relief being able to post to a Rootsweb list again after a month in virtual solitary confinement. :-) I wasn't the only "old timer" with the problem, apparently, since the admin of another list posted this on 11 October - the same day my own difficulties began :- http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com:80/th/read/LANCSGEN/2008-10/1223757224 and someone else on the Listowners's list on 5 November :- http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/Listowners/2008-11/1225916460 It was suggested to me several times that the problem was being caused by my outward e-mail scanning program, but interestingly the situation appears to have returned to normal without me having to change anything at my end.
