    3. Hi all (especially Walter Jones in Scotland) Further to my post last week I've now received a copy certificate for the marriage of artist Warren WILLIAMS' parents, which reads thus :- St John the Baptist, Toxteth 5 May 1857 John WILLIAMS, 30, bachelor, mariner, residence Wellington Road, father Hugh WILLIAMS, farmer, and Elizabeth DAVIES, 30, widow, residence Bedford Street, father David LLOYD, wheelwright. [Both bride & groom signed the register. Witnesses were Donald McKNIGHT and Margaret SHARPLES]. THIS, then, would appear to be John with his parents and siblings six years earlier :- 1851 Wales Census Bodwaren, Holyhead Hugh WILLIAMS, 65, farmer of 82 acres, AGY Holyhead Dorothy, wife, 56, CAE Llanllyfni Hugh, son, U, 33, farmer's son, AGY Holyhead John, son, U, 24, sailor, AGY Holyhead Henry, son, U, 22, smith, AGY Holyhead Richard, son, 12, AGY Holyhead The Holyhead St Cybi parish registers have the following baptisms for children of Hugh & Dorothy WILLIAMS, farmer, of Bodwaren, Holyhead :- 1813 (7 June) Margaret 1815 (23 July) William 1818 (5 Dec) Hugh 1821 (6 Jan) Emma 1825 (27 Mar) Elizabeth 1827 (1 July) John Crosby lightship seaman John WILLIAMS (from the 1861 England Census) named his only son HUGH and only daughter Harriet Dorothy. So the inspiration for Liverpool-born artist Hugh's 'professional' name of Warren WILLIAMS looks to have been the name of his grandparents' farm in Holyhead? PS. Can send a scan of the 1857 marriage certificate to anyone sufficiently interested. John WILLIAMS died in Toxteth on 15 March 1869 at the early age of 41, his occupation being given as officer on board the Mersey Buoy Tender. One strong possibility for John with his earlier family is :- 1851 Census Forge Hill, Holyhead William WILLIAMS, 49, boatman, Holyhead Ellinor, wife, 48, Holyhead John, son, U, 21, Holyhead [no occupation shown] Jane, daur, 17, Holyhead William, son, 9, Holyhead Wondered if anyone on the list might have access to early Holyhead registers and might be able to identify John's baptism c1827-1830? And maybe also his parents' marriage, which ideally would identify his mother as Ellinor WARREN, thus explaining artist grandson Hugh's apparent fascination with this name? Gordon Evans Wirral UK

    3. Hi Walter You wrote to me privately a fortnight ago :- >I have a Great Aunt, Cicely JONES (b1869 New Brighton) who (M) a Hugh >Warren WILLIAMS (b1860 Liverpool). He was a well known Artist in his >day, and for a long time I've tried to pin down just where and when he >was born etc :- (Got his B Cert. earlier this year). Wondered if you could perhaps give a few details from the birth certificate - in particular whether he was registered as Hugh Warren, or just plain Hugh? PS. Note my offer concerning his parents' marriage certificate in the post below my signature.
