>From the, Liverpool Mercury, Wednesday June 27, 1860: MELANCHOLY BOAT ACCIDENT AT HOYLAKE: Four lives lost A melancholy accident, which resulted in the sacrifice of four lives took place on Monday at Hoylake. The circumstances, as we hear from inquiry, are as follows:- Between twelve and one o'clock, a party of men and boys proceeded in a boat to Hoyle Bank, for the purpose of gathering cockles. There were five persons in the boat, namely, John Silcock and his son Henry Silcock, a boy about ten years old; also John Randalls, who had with him two sons, Job and Joseph. After filling three or four bags with cockles, the party was returning to Hoylake, when, in consequence of the state of the weather, three bags of cockles were thrown overboard. Immediately afterwards the boat was struck by a squall and capsized, all the occupants being thrown into the water. In this emergency Silcock seized hold of his son and struggled hard to reach the shore with him, but was unsuccessful in doing so. The father saved himself with difficulty, and was the only survivor of the casualty. The body of his son was recovered in the afternoon. Yesterday morning, the body of Randalls and his two sons were found on the beach, and the scene in the dwelling of the bereaved widow is stated to have been of a most heart-rending description. The poor woman is, as may be imagined, left in a most destitute condition consequent on the melancholy accident. Yesterday, an inquest on the bodies of the sufferers was held before Mr Churton, the coroner, and after evidence had been received the jury returned a verdict of 'Accidentally drowned'. Kind regards, Yvonne
