Sole survivor from the FLEETWING was another nephew, Frederick Arthur JONES (b1888 Hoose), who I believe went on to marry Sophia Morris STONALL on 16 October 1922 in New Brighton St James?. One of only three survivors from the sand-hopper BETA, which also sank, was Henry's Liverpool Pilot 2nd cousin once removed Henry James EVANS (b1864 Liverpool), who had hitched a lift back into Liverpool on that vessel after taking a White Star liner safely out to sea.. Will be most surprised if some of the names listed above don't ring some bells somewhere - including in Melbourne, Australia. :-) Best regards Gordon From: "Julie Swift" <greenswift@hotmail.com> To: <eng-merseyside@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2011 5:40 PM Subject: [ENG-MERSEYSIDE] ancestors in the papers Hi there - I recently started looking through 19th Century British library newspapers online & found some wonderful information regarding my ancestors. I'm related to the Jones fishing family of Hoylake & found several items mentioning members of the family. This is one I found from The Liverpool Mercury , Friday July 11: "July 1, aged 103, Elizabeth Jones, widow of the late Peter Jones, of Hoylake. She has left between 200 & 300 grandchildren & great-grandchildren." Another news item mentioned a riot in Bangor, North Wales in 1841, caused by drunken fishermen from Hoylake & Liverpool, & I found my 3x great grandfather Samuel Jones, along with William Eccles, commended for bravery when he helped rescue a sinking Belgian vessel & saved several lives. 3. Hi cousins Julie, Gordon, Pam, Nudged!! So sorry not to have replied earlier. I've been wandering around Northumberland churchyards today (as you do)!! Peter and Elizabeth Jones are my 5 x great grandparents. Their daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Jones is my 4 x gt. Grandmother married to Joseph Sherlock 12 August 1800, St. Peter, Liverpool. Julie, I think we've talked in the past about Swifts. Can you please remind me of your Swift tree (I think I've lost a computer or two since we last talked).
