    3. During the war my mum took us over the four bridges from Wallasey to Birkenhead. She used to push my brother in his pushchair, with my sister and I hanging onto the handle {I was always on the oputside and never failed to return home wihtout a big bump on my forehead from walking into the lampost, because I was facinated by the big shops in Watson Street] We had picked masses rose hips and had been given extra sugar coupons., off some elderly neighbours. We swopped the sugar and rose hips [possibly some sweet ration coupons and money as well ] for sweets, in premises in South Claughton Road I,m not sure who ran this "swop shop"' Regards Ann. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marian Foster" <marianfoster@mypostoffice.co.uk> To: <eng-merseyside@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2011 11:55 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-MERSEYSIDE] Rationing (was HANCOCK etc) > We were allowed one sweet after our evening meal (and only if we'd eaten > everything up!! 3. Rose hips have the highest vitamin C content of all fruits. Remember Rose Hip Syrup? I used to fill a dummy (comforter) like a little bottle with a teat on, for my daughter. Then this stuff was outlawed as being the biggest teeth rotter on record. Fortunately my daughters have healthy teeth Wonder if rose hips are still put to good use? 3. Yes, unfortunately rosehips on their own are really really bitter so you need a huge amount of sugar to make it palatable but it was lovely!!
