Hi Gordon, I'm happy to see you agree with me on Samuel SHERLOCK marrying Ann Jane RILEY and thanks for the insight that she and Mary Ann Riley are most likely sisters as I have both marriages within my tree. Unfortunately my research stops there so I know I need to do catchup on both sisters marriages into the SHERLOCK family so it gives me something to look forward to take care of. I appreciate these additional clues that hopefully will put me on the path to completing these 2 lines. Yes, I had read your interesting post to Dorothy on the Flixton Sherlock line and Hoylake Boat Disaster although they don't appear to be connected to my tree (yet) Warm Regards Eleanor In a message dated 1/4/2011 5:45:39 A.M. I'd say you are, Eleanor, since Samuel & Lydia named their eldest son Thomas (after his grandfather) and another child Richard, after his great-grandfather. Irlam-born grandfather Thomas was baptised on 29 May 1808 in Flixton, son of Richard SHERLOCK and Mary, identifying him as a descendant of the Flixton SHERLOCK branch I mentioned in a response to Dorothy Jones' post on 27 December (subject Daniel Thomas Hardman). The Samuel SHERLOCK b1838 Tranmere, son of Samuel SHERLOCK (b1809 Liverpool) and Sarah DAVENPORT, had a cousin Samuel SHERLOCK (b1831 Birkenhead), son of George Prenton SHERLOCK (b1802 Liverpool) and Rhoda SMITH. On 5 March 1855, in Liverpool St Peter, Samuel b1831 married a Mary Ann RILEY (b1837 Liverpool), daughter of Matthew RILEY and Catherine GRAHAM, who had married on 30 May 1836 in Liverpool St Nicholas. Mary Ann RILEY, baptised on 2 July 1837 in Liverpool St Anthony (RC), had a sibling Ann Jane baptised on 9 June 1839 in the same church. So the indications are that the two Samuel SHERLOCK cousins married two RILEY sisters? Cornelius was the architect of many fine buildings still to be seen in Liverpool, including the Picton Library, Walker Art Gallery, No 1 Victoria Street, St Stephen's church in Gateacre and Sandown Park in Wavertree :- http://www.victorianweb.org/art/architecture/liverpool/1.html http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/speel/place/lpoolwmbrown.htm http://www.lookingatbuildings.org.uk/cities/liverpool/victoria-street/no-1-victoria-street.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Stephen's_Church,_Liverpool http://www.dhwav.btinternet.co.uk/page42.html Cornelius married vicar's daughter Jane Rebecca CRAWFORD (b1822 IRE Roscommon) on 7th November 1849 in Kirk Onchan, Isle of Man, the couple having just one daughter Clarinda Beatrice SHERLOCK (b1858 Liverpool). Clarinda married merchant's son Reginald Louis ROSS in St Marylebone parish church, London, on 25 June 1884 and had just one son Reginald Sherlock ROSS, born on 6 April 1897 in Quebec, Canada. Reginald Louis was dead by 1901, when widow Clarinda ROSS was living with her widowed mother Jane SHERLOCK + widowed aunt Eleanor GANDELL in Windsor Road, Southport. Clarinda never re-married, dying in Hendon in 1939, aged 80. Reginald Sherlock ROSS died in London in 1970, aged 73.
