The 1851 census shows Mary Ann living with sister Eliza McMullen and nephew James McMullen, aged 14 (both born in Ireland). There is a James McMullen on the 1871 census born in 1836 from Co Down. It is possible that this is the same James McMullin. Perhaps you could try searching for Mary McMullin in Co Down to begin with.
The Irish records are a minefield very little is left either burnt or pulped so only odd bits of census left. Ireland is not only split into counties but Townlands and parishes so you also need to know exactly which townland and then parish as well? Some of the church records are good if they have survived but you would need to know which church and as they are not on line get someone to do the search if it is impossible to get over to Ireland. All the churches had to send their records to Dublin pre 1921 and it was there they caught fire c1922 but some churches either sent a copy of their registers or took a copy to keep which they were not supposed to do but luckily for some of us they did. Many old registers are still held at the church, when I went looking in the local church the vicar took me into his kitchen and told me to help myself they were all stacked in the cupboard under the stairs. I even found my own christening! PRONI is on the move like the Liverpool record office so again you would need to see when records are accessible again. I have got some of my mum's side back to 1820 but only because mum knew so much and I was able to verify via the church records/marriage registry offices but some I can only get to c1870! There is a good FREE site you may wish to try http://www.ulsterancestry.com There are lots of free pages of information plus a genealogy forum, if you go there and register with the Down site you can post your queries there like this Rootsweb one. George DIX (b1846 Liverpool) married Ellen ARMITAGE (b1846 Liverpool) in 1864 in Liverpool St Anne's Richmond, by whom he had seven children. Ellen died in 1883, aged 36, and four years later George married her school-teacher elder sister Elizabeth ARMITAGE in 1887 in Walton Breck Holy Trinity. So Elizabeth would have been both aunt and step-mother to George DIX's seven children? Ellen & Elizabeth's sibling Margaret ARMITAGE (b1857 Liverpool) married George's younger brother Andrew DIX on 6 September 1877 in Edge Hill St Jude. So the relationship between Margaret DIX and Elizabeth DIX would have been both sister and sister-in-law? Regards Gordon
Thanks Redmand, Eliza McMullen is a widow, but the census says she is a sister to Mary Ann,i would have thought sister in law ?
