    3. Hi Gordon, many thanks for your reply and yes we are related. My great grandfather Was William Leay 1850-1914 married Ellen McAllister, their 3rd daughter Elizabeth was my grandmother and her daughter Maud Elizabeth was my mother. Have attached a few sheets of info to clarify the relationship and would be most interested in comparing data with you. My initial reson for joining the list was, apart from finding living relatives, was for photographs. I have a photograph of Ellen Leay[McAllister] with her first 3 children. Also a photograph of Agnes Leay[daughter of William and Mary Leay[Oxton]. Ada Annie Morris[Leay] had a son,Bertie Langton Morris 1904-1991. I have a copy of his death certificate and it prompted me to look for relatives who may have a picture of my great Grandfather and his father Joseph. Check the small amount of data i've sent ,have loads more Cheers for now Taffy in cardiff > From: gordon.w.evans@btinternet.com > To: eng-merseyside@rootsweb.com > Date: Sat, 28 Aug 2010 21:08:12 +0100 > Subject: Re: [ENG-MERSEYSIDE] Leay-Morris family from Birkenhead and Bootle > > Hi Taffy > > Ada Annie LEAY (b1861 Rock Ferry) features in my family tree by virtue of > her being my 6th cousin 4 times removed. :-) > So presumably your great-grandfather is in there somewhere too? > > I have Ada Annie as a daughter of Joseph LEAY (b1813 Mollington) and his 2nd > wife Ann HUGHES, with siblings :- > > 1851 William (m Ellen McALLISTER 1871 in Birkenhead St Mary) > 1852 Elizabeth > 1854 James > 1859 Robert > > Plus half-siblings from Joseph's 1st marriage to Jane MAINWARING > nee GREGORY :- > > 1840 Ellen Rebecca > 1842 Sarah > 1844 Joseph > 1846 Thomas (m Ann COE 1869 in Liverpool St Peter) > > Joseph (b1813 Mollington) is believed to have been a son of Peter LEAY > (b1779 Burton) and Ellen nee WALTON, who married 28 February 1813 > in Backford St Oswald. > Peter (b1779) is believed to have been a son of Peter LEAY and Ann nee > WILSON (b1745 Burton), who married 13 April 1779 in Burton St Nicholas. > > This WILSON line traces back with reasonable certainty to a WilliamWILSON > and Cicely nee FELLS (born c1584), who is my 9 x great-grandmother. > > William & Cicely were grandparents to Thomas WILSON (b1663 Burton), Bishop > of Sodor & Man from 1697 until his death in 1755. > > Look forward to corresponding with you further should you consider we have a > genuine connection? > > PS. 3. I'm not Gordon, but...: The link Gordon posted is a URL shortening service. There are several sites like this, the best-known one perhaps being tinyurl.com. Another one that I sometimes use is ta.gg What these services basically do is turn a long link into a short one. The problem with long links (like the ones produced from a Google search, for example) is that they get broken up into several lines when you include them in an email. (They may well appear as one looong line when you compose your email, but depending on what mailers your recipients use chances are that long line will have been broken up into several lines when the email is opened at the other end) So - to avoid this you use these shortening services, like url.ie, tinyurl.com or ta.gg Instead of pasting your long link straight into your email you go to one of these sites, paste it in the box, click on "truncate" (or whatever the button might say - I am looking at url.ie at the moment) and... voila, out comes a much shorter link that you can paste into an email without risking broken lines. So, for example... I have just typed lancashire genealogy into Google and got this link: http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&source=hp&q=lancashire+genealogy&aq=f&aqi=g3g-m5&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&fp=26aec8f63e2836fe I have now pasted this into url.ie and got this http://url.ie/79ej which will take you to the same Google search. As Gordon said, a very useful service! Angelika Preulet@aol.com wrote: > Hi Gordon, > > This doesn't take me anywhere but to a search engine, I even tried adding > www. before it. 2. Hi Angelika, Thank you for the link and explanation. It appears that yesterday the problem was not the link Gordon sent but my internet provider as both links are working fine today. I realized since I didn't get an error message that the problem somehow was with me prompting the request for the actual website so I could see if it would open. 3. Hi Eleanor Thank you for posting the link to Gwyn & Val HUGHES' website, of which I was in fact already aware but which could well prove of interest to other listers. Val HUGHES (nee ECCLES) is my 5th cousin once removed, her roots tracing back to my 4 x great-grandfather Peter JONES (Hoylake fisherman from the mid-1770's) and ultimately to the marriage of Michael ECCLES & Catherine HULTON on 8 July 1737 in Formby St Peter. Val's great-grandmother Annie PARR (b1865 Hoose) is believed to have been a 5 x great-grandaughter to my 6 x great-grandfather Richard SHERLOCK, baptised on 16 January 1674 in Woodchurch Holy Cross. Rather intriguing, therefore, that this thread also concerns a Richard SHORLICAR, baptised on 9 October 1664 in Formby St Peter? 2. Hi Gordon, I hope you found it as interesting as I did -especially the gravestone writings. Here is a website for the Hoylake ECCLES family photos and a Hughes gedcom to go with it. I can't view it for whatever the reason (java runtime) but maybe it can shed some light on what you are looking for. I also notice a PARR photo and Hoylake fishing boat "the Queen" photo _Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site: User Home Pages: Family Histories from North Wales_ (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:x0pHcW7m6TcJ:familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/u/g/Gwyn-Hughes/index.html+eccle s+family+history&cd=32&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us) If I find anything of more significance I'll let you know. 3. Hi Marged Thanks for your response, and yes I agree - there are many AUGHTONs from North Meols still around the Southport area today. But not, as far as I'm aware, a single SHORLICAR in sight, despite numerous entries under this name (+ variations SHORLICKER, SHORLIKER and SHERLICOR) in the parish registers of both Formby St Peter and North Meols St Cuthbert, commencing with the baptism in Formby of a Richard SHORLICAR, son of James SHORLICAR, on 9 October 1664. The name appears to have mutated from SHORLICAR to SHERLOCK in the Formby registers during the late 1790's. Formby fisherman William SHORLICAR was baptised as such in Formby St Peter on 3 June 1759, and was William SHORLICAR when he married Ellen RICE in the same church on 21 October 1788. Children were born in Formby as follows :- 1790 Thomas 1793 Elizabeth 1795 James 1798 Jane 1800 William The first three were baptised as SHORLICAR, but the last two as SHERLOCK. William b1800 is described as a son of William SHERLOCK & Ellen in his baptism entry and as William SHERLOCK in his burial entry on 29 September 1801. William b1759 and Ellen nee RICE are both described as SHERLOCK in their respective burial entries in 1801 and 1803. Jane b1798 is SHERLOCK in her baptism entry but was SHORLICAR when she married John LOVELADY on 19 May 1819. In the 1841 Census she's living in Formby with sibling James SHORLICAR (b1795) but in the 1851 he's James SHERLOCK. One real puzzle concerning this family is the marriage on 2 January 1833 in Liverpool St James of a Thomas BLEVIN and Elizabeth KENYON. Thomas was baptised on 27 October 1811 in Formby St Peter, son of Paul BLEVIN and Margaret nee MACKERALL. Elizabeth appears to have been baptised on 10 April 1812 in Formby St Peter, daughter of William KENYON and Mary. Thomas & Elizabeth BLEVIN had seven children born in Ainsdale or Formby, the youngest of whom was registered in 1842 as Elizabeth Sherlock BLEVIN. And when Elizabeth nee KENYON died in 1887 at the age of 75 she was described as Elizabeth Sharlock BLEVIN. The only logical explanation would be that Elizabeth KENYON's mother was Mary nee SHERLOCK, but I'm blowed if I can identify anyone of that name in either the Formby or North Meols registers. :-( Incidentally, I'm reliable informed that a Shorlicars Lane features in old maps of Formby.
