Hi Sandra, I have senior moments all the time, Thanks for checking. I'll best have to get one of the children's birth certificates. At least with going for the children, I know I'm not wasting money on an erroneous marriage. Enjoy what's left of your day. Eleanor In a message dated 1/15/2011 12:43:39 P.M. >From the, Liverpool Mercury, Wednesday June 27, 1860: MELANCHOLY BOAT ACCIDENT AT HOYLAKE: Four lives lost A melancholy accident, which resulted in the sacrifice of four lives took place on Monday at Hoylake. The circumstances, as we hear from inquiry, are as follows:- Between twelve and one o'clock, a party of men and boys proceeded in a boat to Hoyle Bank, for the purpose of gathering cockles. There were five persons in the boat, namely, John Silcock and his son Henry Silcock, a boy about ten years old; also John Randalls, who had with him two sons, Job and Joseph. After filling three or four bags with cockles, the party was returning to Hoylake, when, in consequence of the state of the weather, three bags of cockles were thrown overboard. Immediately afterwards the boat was struck by a squall and capsized, all the occupants being thrown into the water. In this emergency Silcock seized hold of his son and struggled hard to reach the shore with him, but was unsuccessful in doing so. The father saved himself with difficulty, and was the only survivor of the casualty. The body of his son was recovered in the afternoon. Yesterday morning, the body of Randalls and his two sons were found on the beach, and the scene in the dwelling of the bereaved widow is stated to have been of a most heart-rending description. The poor woman is, as may be imagined, left in a most destitute condition consequent on the melancholy accident. Yesterday, an inquest on the bodies of the sufferers was held before Mr Churton, the coroner, and after evidence had been received the jury returned a verdict of 'Accidentally drowned'. Hi Walter, Boy this board is smoking! Thanks for your leads - so kind of you to check! I'm hoping Marian is correct. I now see the baptism you mention on familysearch if it is in fact the same one. as well as the Scotland census: Parish: Dysart; ED: 14; Page: 30; Line: 8; Roll: CSSCT1871_73; Year: 1871. living with grandparents KIRK. Hi Angelika, Thanks for the lookups. I've been pondering subscribing to Find My Past after my ancestry subscription runs out (march). I've tried them on a free search during the World Cup (thanks Pam) and like them. I have Jane Parr HANCOCK's baptism as well as her sis Margaret and am getting more curious about their mom so most likely will go the GRO route to make sure. Hi Marian, Thanks for checking. May I ask where/how you found this -in what town? You obviously checked something I've missed, unless my search criteria was wrong. With this last name of STOCKS, I'm now seeing a listing in Derby, Derbyshire which fits since Thomas married after the 1891 census, Providing of course that the name Isabella on census/baptism records is a first name rather than a middle name. Hi Gordon, Many thanks for the details on John Evans who was farming in Barnston. It was more than probably this gentleman who witnessed Robert Silcock's will. Frankly, I'm struggling to identify much about John and Hannah (nee Silcock) Davies. They married 2 February 1792 at St. Bridget's, West Kirby. I can see a baptism at Woodchurch for a Philip Davies, son of John and Hannah Davies of Barnston on 16 April 1797, and not much else, and yet they were well favoured in Robert Silcock's 1817 will. Maybe they stayed on the farm with him until his death. I'm curious as to why daughter Elizabeth Silcock only received a shilling. Maybe she had already had a settlement at her marriage, but who did she marry? Still beavering away trying to sort it all out. There don't seem to be many very early on, and I sometimes think, were they interchangeable with Simcocks in the early days? Please, can you identify any of the witnesses in the extended family? Also, please pass on my many birthday wishes to Dorothy. That's more than wonderful news to start 2011. Ties up many loose ends in my extended family tree, and seems to identify virtually all the Bidston, West Kirby and Hoylake SILCOCKs as descendants of this line. Isn't it just sod's law, though, that the one name missing from baptisms of children of Robert & Hannah in the CPRP data-base is your ancestor Robert SILCOCK born c1771/2? PS. Wife Dorothy managed to make it to her 66th birthday today. :-) Best Gordon From: "YvonnePurdy" <von@yvonnepurdy.free-online.co.uk> To: <ENG-MERSEYSIDE@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2011 3:42 PM Subject: [ENG-MERSEYSIDE] Robert Silcock's will dated 21st May 1817 Hi all, I've just received the will of Robert SILCOCK of Barnston, late Farmer, dated 21 May 1817. Robert SILLCOCK married Hannah NEWPORT on 31 January 1761 at Bidston, and I'm now quite sure they are my 5 x great grandparents. He mentions £10 to his son Robert Silcock, his son Henry Silcock, his daughter Ann Richardson; one shilling to his daughter Elizabeth; all the rest of money and goods to his daughter Hannah for ever, and his son in law John Davies to be the whole and sole executor. Witnesses were Joseph Peers, John Evans and John Cookson.
