I had been having a little trouble in tracking down my SIDDORN ancestors in Tarporley in the 1871, 1881 & 1891 censuses. I have now found them listed in those years as SIDDON. SIDDORNS and SIDDERNS respectively which I guess is not too far from the correct spelling of the name. What did seem just a little outlandish to me was Ancestry.com managing to transcribe the 1891 SIDDERNS to read LIDDERUS. Talk about making things difficult. I think I will stick with SIDDORN. Hope everyone is having a relaxing Easter break. Alan

Hi A Foo Foo band is a band made up of anyone who can make a tune out of something. Like a comb and tissue, or a pair of table spoons, rattled together, and banged on the knees etc. The Foo Foo Band performs sailors' songs and dances. A Foo Foo Band used to be an impromptu band, consisting of the ship's crew on the late 19th century sailing boats. Andrea New Zealand

I am looking for contact with a Maureen Lawton from Liverpool. Has anyone got her real email address, last address was with @merseymail. I had an email from her at 0700hrs today, but the return address was not accepted and I got a MAILER-DAEMON from my reply, I think she may have entered it wrong. Maureen please check your address and email. Ron Fitzpatrick South Australia
A quick scan of Google (first place I always look for new information) reveals that Foo Foo Bands, which included spoons, originated in ships' bands. A quote from an American record company states that "The Foo Foo Band performs sailors' songs and dances. A Foo Foo Band used to be an impromptu band, consisting of the ship's crew on the late 19th century sailing boats, and likewise this Foo Foo Band consists of members from bands of the Dutch folkrevival." There is a popular modern rock band called The Foo Foo Fighters but I don't know whether they were influenced by the earlier bands. In the USA Tom Callinan (known as Tom-the-Pirate) carries on the tradition of Foo Foo music when he "performs and teaches: chanteys (work songs) and sea songs about pirates, buccaneers, privateers, salty dogs, and a host of infamous nautical no-accounts. Self-accompanied on an array of string, wind, and percussion instruments, Tom gets the toes tapping and the hands clapping with spirited instrumental tunes played on a pennywhistle or ocarina. Learn to play the spoons, become part of a "foo-foo" band selected from audience volunteers, and revel in an assortment of songs and tales about the comings and goings, the shipwrecks, the pirates, the trash and the treasure - past and present." Another correspondant cites the nautical construction "foo-foo" (or "poo-poo"), used to refer to something effeminate or some technical thing whose name has been forgotten, e.g. "foo-foo box", "foo-foo valve". This was common on ships by the early nineteenth century. A notorious Manchester drag artiste called herself "Foo-Foo". Hope this enlightens somewhat. Hazel

My late mother was a 20s/30s person and she spoke of the Foo Foo Band - or was it Froo Froo? Unfortunately that's all I can remember, and mum is long gone. Was it the Comb and Paper type of band, or "Kazoo"? Marged I have been told by my mum in her 81st year, that her sister, my Aunty Mary, was a member of the Foo Foo Band in the Liverpool area during the 1920/30s. Many thanks to Caryl, and Paul Christian for the Toxteth site. I found my IBBS connection mentioned indirectly in the Churchs. The Herculanium Chapel built for the pottery workers which included those who came from Staffordshire. My Ibbs were among 14 people who travelled by barge down the Mersey /Trent canal in 1796. Many thanks, Margaret in Australia. -----Original Message----- From: ENG-MERSEYSIDE-D-request@rootsweb.com <ENG-MERSEYSIDE-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: ENG-MERSEYSIDE-D@rootsweb.com <ENG-MERSEYSIDE-D@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, 19 March 2005 8:46 Subject: ENG-MERSEYSIDE-D Digest V05 #53
For those of you with ancestors from Toxteth Liverpool, Paul Christian has built a brilliant site here and he has just added a whole load of maps to the site too! An excellent resource _http://toxteth.net/index.htm_ (http://toxteth.net/index.htm) Caryl
Alan, If I may make a suggestion, first of all go by the children ages and try and see if the missing ones (James, William, Robert, Esther) are recorded as being married in that time frame, (Between 1881 & 1901) Eg: On http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/cheshirebmd/marriages.html Cheshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1891 to 1895 STOTT Charles MALOYD Annie M Birkenhead, Holy Trinity Wirral BK2/3/200 STOTT John SMITH Mary Hannah Birkenhead, St Mary Wirral BK8/14/484 then check out their Certificates for the Fathers name, if all goes well it should narrow the gap on Walter STOTT'S Death date, and give you the children's Marriage details as well. Ron Fitzpatrick Adelaide South Australia Ex Liverpool - Wirral. ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Friday, March 18, 2005 1:34 PM Subject: [ENG-MERSEY] Walter STOTT - Birkenhead
I think someone recently was asking this question. I grew up in Rodney Street and then Brookland Road off the Woodlands in Birkenhead but always thought of myself as being from Birkenhead rather than Tranmere but now when I see old maps of the area it seems that anywhere to the Woodlands side of Borough Road is classed as Tranmere. I always thought that you had to get out towards Green Lane before you were in Tranmere. Have I been wrong all these years? Don't get me wrong on this. My family have roots in Green Lane, Helmingham Road, Farm Road, Old Chester Road and various other streets in Tranmere and I am proud of that but I am just confused about exactly what are the boundaries of Tranmere and Birkenhead. Cheers, Alan
Can anyone help me please? In 1881 at 6 Lowther Street, Birkenhead I have Walter STOTT 46 with his wife Mary Ann 46 and their children James, William, Robert, Esther, Walter, Charles, John and Thomas. By the 1891 census at 6 Roe Street there was Mary Ann STOTT 55 as head of family and sons Walter 23, Charles 22, John 18 and Thomas 16. Could anyone help me with when Walter STOTT died between 1881 and 1891? Obviously any other snippets of information would also be much appreciated. Also is it just a coincidence that the street numbers were both No 6 or did Lowther Street become Roe Street? I do know that Lowther Street was off Exmouth Street. Cheers, Alan
