    1. Saul and Samuel SIDDORN
    2. Alan Siddorn
    3. H Alan, Thanks for that. All I am going on at the moment is a typed list of details from the Bunbury, Cheshire Banns Book for 1859-1900 that someone very kindly sent to me. Perhaps I need to get myself to Bunbury or wherever the book is kept to see the original but I am definitely leaning towards your opinion. Saul or Samuel was obviously not a happy man at the time as the entry in the book states that on 16th Dec 1860 "Banns forbid by Jos. Siddorn's parents he being only 19 1/4 years of age." Joseph SIDDORN was my great grandfather and Saul or Samuel was his father. Thanks again, Alan ---------- From: "Alan Johnson" <alan_mar@lineone.net> To: <ENG-MERSEYSIDE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 07, 2005 8:47 AM Subject: Saul and Samuel SIDDORN I have been transcribing part of the 1861 census and have seen Samuel shortened to Saml; William to Wm and Henry to Hy, so it's probable that Samuel Siddorn was so shortened and the handwriting mis-read. 1. Another SIDDORN question
    2. Alan Siddorn
    3. I have a problem with an elusive grandfather. Joe SIDDORN was born 17/12/1881 in Tarporley, Cheshire so just missed out on being included in the 1881 census. He did appear in the 1891 census when he was still living in Tarporley with his parents Joseph and Ann SIDDORN. By the 1901 census Joseph was dead but Ann SIDDORN was still living at the same address in Tarporley but Joe was no longer there and as far as I can see appears to have disappeared into thin air until he resurfaces in Birkenhead in 1908 when he married Alice STOTT. Obviously I would love for someone to get back to me and tell me that they have found Joe in the 1901 census but realistically what I am asking is for opinions as to the most common reasons for people seeming to disappear. Military service, prison, travel abroad, totally different spelling of the name, simply slipping through the net? What are other peoples experiences? Thanks, Alan

    3. Please don't laugh but are the names Saul and Samuel interchangeable? I have just come across the name Saul SIDDORN as part of my family history but have never previously seen the name Saul in any references to the SIDDORN name. There do however seem to be quite a few records relating to various Samuel SIDDORN's. Can Saul be a shortened form of Samuel? Thanks, Alan

    3. Prompted by the report of the accident at Cammell Lairds I wondered if anyone had knowledge of an accident at Liverpool docks involving my Great Grandfather Charles Manning a blacksmith at the docks who died at the early age of 36 in 1892. He was born in Bristol but lived at Cooper St. in liverpool which i think is near to the docks area. Margaret in australia.

    2. John Greig
    3. In my wife's line there is : George John FREELAND, b. 1835/1838? Portsmouth, Hampshire; m. (1867) Harriott Ann ROBERTS, b, 1849 Liverpool. They had various children in Liverpool between 1867 and 1880. However, GJF, described as a 'ship rigger' living in Everton at the 1871 census, had died before the 1881 census. At that time the children were with Harriot in Toxteth Park apart from the eldest son, 9-year old George William, who was an inmate at the Liverpool Seamans Orphan Institution. He was employed and back with the family at the 1891 census. Currently, the charity indicates that it will consider applications on behalf of the children of deceased British merchant seafarers. Can any one tell me whether ship riggers would have gone to sea or, at that period, did the Institution also accept applications from the children of workers in maritime-related trades? (This, and other matters, means that a visit to the Archives section of the Liverpool Maritime Museum is a high priority when next I manage to get to Liverpool.) John Greig
